@yorkcardinals Softball homers twice against Baruch in CUNYAC bout

York College returns to home field Friday (Apr. 19) to take on Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC doubleheader

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened their CUNYAC road slate Saturday afternoon against the Baruch College Bearcats (8-10, 2-2 CUNYAC) from Flowers Park.  The Cardinals homered in both games, but were unable to keep pace with Baruch, falling 20-5 in the opener before an 18-1 setback in the series finale.

Game 1: Baruch 20, York 5 (5 Inn.)
  • A two-run homer from Baruch's Mia Faddah (2-for-3, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI) and 3-RBI double by Julia Cuttone (2-for-3, 2 BB, 3 R, 4 RBI) spearheaded a five-hit nine-run first frame for the Bearcats.
  • York's Alicia Gumbs smacked her first-career home run in the top of the second to make the score 9-2.
  • Getting 12 batters to the plate, Carly Quint's (2-for-2, 2 BB, 3 R, 6 RBI) 3-run bomb punctuated a seven-run bottom of the second to give Baruch a 16-2 advantage.
  • The Cardinals rallied for two in the third inning off Julia Cuttone (W, 1-0: 4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) to trim the deficit to 12 (16-4).
  • Quint smacked another 3-run homer in the bottom of the third to extend Baruch's lead to 19-4.
  • Sofia Soric's RBI single in the top of the fourth pushed York's fifth run across the board.
  • Cuttone brought home the Bearcats' 20th run after an RBI base knock in the bottom of the frame before retiring the side in the top of the fifth to seal a 20-5 victory.
  • Going the distance for the fifth time in as many starts, Ayana Saavedra (L, 2-3: 4 IP, 14 H, 14 ER, 8 BB, SO) was tagged with the loss for York.
  • Outside the final score, Baruch had the edge in hits (14-4), walks (8-3), extra-base hits (6-1), and stolen bases (3-0).
Game 2: Baruch 18, York 1  (5 Inn.)
  • The Cardinals put the pressure on Baruch's Caroline Gallagher (W, 4-5: 5 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) in the first, with singles by Soric and Samantha Panameno, along with a walk from Michelle Mancuso.  With runners on first and second and two outs, Panameno was caught stealing third to end York's rally in the top of the first.
  • A solo shot from Megan Bell (2-for-3, 2 BB, RBI, 2 R) and a grand slam by Meenakshi Mugari (1-for-4, BB, 4 RBI, 2 R) paced a seven-run attack for Baruch on Remedios Garcia (L, 2-7: 4 IP, 13 H, 16 ER, 8 BB, 2 SO) in the bottom of the frame.
  • Threatening in the top of the second, Gallagher struck out two-consecutive Cardinals to leave Andrea Wright stranded on third base.
  • Batting around in the home half of the frame, the Bearcats utilized two hits, three walks, and five wild pitches to plate six runs and extend their advantage to 13-0.
  • Faith Howes drilled her first-career dinger in the top of the fourth to break the scoring ice for York to make it a 13-1 scoreline.
  • Garcia punched out a pair of Bearcats in a fourth inning that saw Baruch settle the 18-1 final with six hits on two errors.
  • York produced stolen bases from Panameno and Andrea Wright on its way to owning a 2-1 advantage over the Bearcats on the basepath.  Baruch finished with the edge in hits (13-3), extra-base hits (3-1) and walks (8-2).  The Cardinals committed four errors compared to Baruch's two.  York also stranded three runners on base while the Bearcats abandoned seven.
