@yorkcardinals Softball opens 2024 season against Wells

York College remains on home field Thursday (Mar. 14) for a non-conference doubleheader against Yeshiva University

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened the 2024 season with a non-conference doubleheader on home field against the Wells College Express (2-0) from Padavan-Preller Fields, falling 18-1 in game one before completing the two-game set with a 15-0 setback.  

Game 1: Wells 18, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Josie Kriemann's double in the top of the first inning helped Wells get on the board with a 2-0 lead.
  • Rallying again  in the second frame on the strength of good baserunning, Kriemman''s 2-RBI single extended the Express advantage to 6-0.
  • Wells put the game out of reach in the third by drawing five walks on the way to scoring seven runs off Cardinal hurler Remedios Garcia (L, 0-1: 5 IP, 12 ER, 3 SO, 9 BB) to go up, 13-0.
  • Andrea Wright produced York's first hit of the season with a leadoff single in the third inning off Christa Koagel (W, 1-0: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 12 SO).
  • Two batters later, Sofia Sorice laced an infield single to put York on the scoreboard to plate home Wright.   
  • Koagel retired the side in order to close out the 18-1 victory in the bottom of the fifth. 
Game 2: Wells 15, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • The Express utilized two hits and four walks on their way to a 4-0 leader after the first inning.
  • With 13 batters coming to the plate, Wells cashed in nine runs in the top of the second to lead 13-0.
  • Going down in order in the top of the third, Ba)iley Friot's single against Garcia (L, 0-1: 5 IP, 6 ER, 4 SO, 7 BB brought home two runs in fourth inning to make the scoreline 15-0.
  • After 11-straight Cardinals were retired, Michelle Mancuso worked a two-out walk in the fourth for York's first base runner.  
  • Faith Howes drilled a single to center field to break Wells' Krieman (W, 1-0: 11 SO, BB) no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth inning.
