FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College sophomore Abubakar Khamis was named a 2024 CUNYAC Men's Tennis Preseason Player to Watch as league officials released Friday the six-member squad.

Competing on the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles courts in 2023, Khamis recorded a team-leading three victories in 10 matches. He won on the No. 6 court (6-3, 6-2) at Lehman College and was the king of the No. 5 space against Saint Elizabeth University (6-0, 6-0) and at Sarah Lawrence College (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5)). For his play, the Brooklyn native received the 2023 York College Men's Tennis Newcomer of the Year Award. 

Voted on by the league coaches, York was chosen sixth in the CUNYAC Preseason Poll.

Baruch College topped the poll with 25 points and five first-place votes, while the Cardinals received five points. York's five-match conference slate begins at home versus Brooklyn College on March 19. 

The 2024 CUNYAC Championship will take place on April 28 (semifinals) and May 2 (finals), with the league champion receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.

Under the leadership of second-year coaches Branislav Grujic and Kathleen DeRienzo, the Cardinals look to return to postseason play for the second consecutive campaign.
