www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball put together a complete match Thursday to capture their first win of the season, pulling away with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18) CUNYAC road victory against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-5, 0-4 CUNYAC) inside Cougars Cave. The triumph was the first career for second-year head coach
Anthony Reyes, and York's first since a 3-2 win at Yeshiva University on February 26, 2020.
First Set Breakdown
- Kills by Cody Ramsey, Louis Caiola, and Isaac Akindipe helped Medgar Evers race out to a 11-4 lead.
- Trailing 15-6, a 6-1 burst from the Cardinals buoyed by three kills from York's David Heyliger, Jr. made the score 16-12.
- Responding to the rally, four more Cougar kills pushed the advantage to 24-15.
- The Cardinals made things tight by claiming the following four points before surrendering a 25-19 set result.
Second Set Breakdown
- York sizzled in the second set, attacking at .550 with 13 kills on 20 swings.
- Heyliger, Jr, Stanley Sanchez, and Glenver Stuart springboarded York to a 5-0 start with kills of their own.
- A pair of aces from Marvin Mondesir helped extend the Cardinal edge to 12-4.
- Taking their largest lead of the season, a Cougar attack error gave York a 12-point advantage (21-9).
- Kills by Alexis Ramirez, Vincent Agokei, and Heyliger, Jr. gave the Cardinals a 25-15 victory.
Third Set Breakdown
- A back-and-forth beginning, a smack down from Akindipe knotted the score at six.
- Two aces from Ramirez keyed a 5-0 burst to give York an 11-6 lead.
- Trading points, Medgar Evers narrowed it to a 17-14 scoreline before a hat trick of attacking errors helped the Cardinals push the lead back up to six (20-14).
- Losing the next three points to make the score 20-17, York closed the set by winning five of the final six points.
Fourth Set Breakdown
- Level at seven, the Cardinals utilized a 9-2 scoring spree to take a 16-9 advantage.
- Trailing 20-12, three aces and a kill by Carlos Abreu spearheaded a mini 5-0 spurt for Medgar Evers to pull within three (20-17).
- Settling down, capped off by a Sanchez ace, the Cardinals once again claimed five of the last six points to emerge victorious.
Leading the Cardinals
- Heyliger, Jr. topped the match with a triple-double, finishing with 20 points on 17 kills and three aces, while hitting .306 and scooping 10 digs.
- Ramirez registered a career-high 18 points and three aces while nailing down 15 kills on 41 swings to go along with six digs.
- Agokei served a career-best three aces
- Stuart totaled a career-high five kills.
- Mondesir served two aces to match a personal-best.
- Sanchez paced the offense with 27 assists.
For Medgar Evers
- Ramsey finished with a team-leading 13 kills, 35 total attacks, and 10 digs.
- Abreu had an all-around performance of 3 kills, 15 attacks, 22 assists, and eight digs.
- Akindipe and Caiola both produced six kills.
Inside the Box Score
York finished the match with season-bests in hitting percentage (.272) and aces (13). The Cardinals produced 40 kills on 92 swings while Medgar Evers hit at a rate of .069. York also outplayed the Cougars in points (56-42), kills (40-30), aces (13-10), blocks (3-1), assists (38-28) and digs (40-33).
