@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball hangs tough with Hunter

York College college continues its CUNYAC slate Thursday (Mar. 7) with a road matchup at Medgar Evers College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball competed hard Tuesday evening in a CUNYAC home matchup against the Hunter College Hawks (6-6, 4-0 CUNYAC). In a spirited battle, York challenged the Hawks, but Hunter ultimately prevailed in straight sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-12) inside York College Gymnasium.

First Set Breakdown
  • Two aces by Stanley Sanchez helped York spark out to a 4-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals maintained a 8-5 edge following two Hunter attacking errors.
  • Vincent Agokei's ace for the Cardinals knotted the score up at 11.
  • A kill by Hunter's Ted Kim capped off an 8-3 burst to give the Hawks a 19-14 advantage.
  • Jon Pfleuger's kill closed the set for Hunter at 25-17.
Second Set Breakdown
  • A back-and-forth affair, there were eight ties in the opening nineteen points with both squads level at nine.
  • Taking control, the Hawks went on an extended 12-3 scoring spree to lead by nine (21-12) wrapped up by a smack down from Matisse Lee-Maarek.
  • An ace from Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye closed the stanza with Hunter winning 25-13.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Ahead 5-4, the Hawks went on a quick 9-1 spurt to push the scoreline to 14-5.
  • At match point (24-8), York stayed tough for four points before falling 25-12.
Leading the Cardinals
  • David Heyliger, Jr. finished with team-highs in kills (6), digs (8), and total attacks (28).
  • Agokei tied his career-best with a hat trick of kills to attack at a rate of .500.
  • Alexis Ramirez totaled four kills on 21 attacks.
  • Sanchez orchestrated the Cardinal offense with nine assists to go along with two aces.
For Hunter
  • Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye contributed seven kills on a stout rate of .308.
  • Lee-Maarek chipped in with five kills and a match-high three blocks.
  • Kyle Foley produced four kills and three aces.
  • Brandon Yeh spearheaded the attack by generating 22 assists.  
Inside the Box Score
York hit at an even .000 rate on 62 swings, while Hunter attacked at a .311 rate on 74 attacks. Additionally, the Hawks controlled the edge in points (54-18), kills (36-13), aces (13-5), assists (36-12), blocks (5-0), and digs (32-17).
