York College returns to home court Thursday (Mar. 21) to play host to Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC bout

BRONX, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball showed promise Tuesday evening throughout their CUNYAC showdown with the Lehman College Lightning (9-12, 6-6 CUNYAC), but were unable to push past the hosts in a three-set (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) setback inside The APEX Arena. 

First Set Breakdown
  • Kills by David Heyliger, Jr. and Alexis Ramirez gave York an early 5-2 advantage.
  • After Lehman claimed four consecutive points, the Cardinals followed that up with their own 4-0 spurt to lead 9-6.
  • York held the lead up until Andrew Figueroa's smack down for the Lightning knotted the score at 14. 
  • Level at 15, a pair of kills by Alain Abreu Esteva buoyed a 4-0 spree to give Lehman a 19-15 edge.
  • The Cardinals got the margin within three points (22-19) before three consecutive Lightning kills clinched the stanza.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Shooting out of the gates, York got off to a 4-0 start.
  • Lehman responded with an 8-1 spurt to take an 8-5 lead.
  • On the back of two Heyliger, Jr. kills, the Cardinals utilized an 8-3 burst to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 15-13 lead.
  • Trading points, two kills by Esteva facilitated a 4-0 mini scoring spree for Lehman to go ahead by two (18-16).
  • A smack down from Ramirez tied the score at 20 for York.
  • After losing the next three points, a hat trick of kills by Heyliger, Jr. fueled a 4-0 burst to gain control (24-23).
  • Saving set point, Lehman won the final three points to claim a 26-24 set victory.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Lightning raced out to a 9-2 edge.
  • Growing into the stanza, York utilized an 8-1 extended run to trim the deficit to two (12-10).
  • Leading 17-15, Lehman sealed the match on an 8-4 burst.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. turned in another solid effort with 14 kills on 41 total attacks (.171 hitting percentage) to go along with 11 digs.
  • Ramirez followed with eight kills (.194 percentage) while scooping up a team-leading 13 digs.
  • Vincent Agokei totaled two aces, two solo blocks, and a pair of block assists.
  • Glenver Stuart contributed four kills.
  • Ahmed Algendy stood up defensively with 12 digs and Stanley Sanchez orchestrated the attack by setting up his teammates 24 times.
For Lehman
  • Ray Rodriguez paced the squad with 13 points, 27 attacks, 18 digs, and four aces.
  • Esteva added a team-leading 12 kills on a stout .444 attack rate.
  • Figueroa (7) and Almir Pepic (6) contributed a combined 13 kills.
  • Christian Agudo distributed a match-high 35 assists.
Inside the Box Score
In total, York hit .157 on 108 attacks, compared to Lehman's rate of .198 on 131 attempts. Lehman also maintained the edge in points (54-37), kills (46-28), aces (8-2), assists (41-26) and digs (64-57). At the net, the Cardinals had four solo blocks and six block assists to the Lightning's zero.  York's attacking percentage (.157) and total blocks (seven) marked its second-highest efforts of the season
