York College resumes CUNYAC play Tuesday (Mar. 26) with a road match at Lehman

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball completed a season sweep of the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-11, 0-10 CUNYAC) Thursday evening, pulling out a 3-2 (25-14, 29-31, 21-25, 25-18, 16-14) CUNYAC win on home court. 

"We played defense well today and were able to capitalize on transition offense much better than we have ever done. We are making progress one game at a time and it can be seen in all the players.  We had a lot of digs and blocks so the system is working. We just have to keep pushing and growing." said head coach Anthony Reyes

First Set Breakdown
  • Even at four, a pair of kills by York's Alexis Ramirez sparked a mini 5-1 run to put the Cardinals up 9-5.
  • Leading 9-8, the Cardinals embarked on an extended 9-1 burst to push their edge to eight (18-10).
  • Following two-straight points by the Cougars to make it an 18-12 scoreline, York claimed seven of the final nine points to take the first stanza.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Kills by Carlos Abreu and Cody Ramsey gave Medgar Evers an early 4-1 lead.
  • Smack downs by Ramirez, David Heyliger, Jr., and Vincent Agokei leveled the score at eight for the Cardinals.
  • Taking control, the Cougars utilized an extended 10-5 burst to take a set-high five-point advantage (18-13).
  • Storming back, a pair of hammer downs by Heyliger, Jr. buoyed a 5-0 run for York to tie it at 18.
  • Trading points, York had the first set-point at 25-24, but attack errors from Ramirez and Agokei gave Medgar Evers the control (26-25).
  • A kill by Heyliger, Jr. gave the Cardinals their third set-point at 29-28.
  • Snatching the set, a kill by Ramsey helped the Cougars claim the final-three points of the set for a 31-29 scoreline.
Third Set Breakdown
  • A back-and-forth showdown, the stanza featured seven ties in the first 20 points with both squads knotted at 10.
  • Kills by Ramsey and Isaac Akindipe facilitated a 14-10 edge for Medgar Evers.
  • Clawing back, the Cardinals leveled the score at 17 after an instinctive block by Glenver Stuart.
  • Carrying the momentum, York attained a 21-19 lead following kills by Ramirez and Agokei.
  • Responding well, the Cougars closed out the set on a 6-0 scoring spree to win 25-21.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • Heyliger, Jr.'s kill capped off a strong 4-0 York start.
  • Medgar Evers fought back with their own 4-0 blitz, once again setting up a back-and-forth battle.
  • Knotted at nine, the Cardinals went on an 8-2 run to earn a 17-11 lead.
  • Keeping a solid pace, York took the match to a deciding set following a 25-18 triumph.
Fifth Set Breakdown
  • Three Cougar attack errors paced York's 4-1 start.
  • Agokei's thunderous block put the Cardinals up 7-4.
  • Kills by Ramirez and Heyliger, Jr. maintained York's three-point margin with a 9-6 lead.
  • Trailing 11-8, a double block from Ramsey and Louis Caiola punctuated a 4-0 burst from Medagr Evers to take a 12-11 advantage.
  • Down to the wire, a phenomenal ace by York's Marvin Mondesir sealed a five-set thriller at 16-14.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. amassed a career-best 61 total attacks and 31.5 points (25 kills, three aces, 3.5 blocks) to go along with 14 digs for his third double-double of the season.
  • Ramirez contributed 15 kills on a solid .140 attack percentage.
  • Stuart generated a career-high 7.5 points, which included three aces, two solo blocks, and three block assists. 
  • Agokei hammered down four blocks.
  • Mondesir leveled a career-high tally of two aces.
  • Sanchez orchestrated the attack with a personal-best 41 assists.
  • Ahmed Algendy also set a personal mark by scooping up 27 digs.
For Medgar Evers
  • Ramsey had an all-around game with a team-leading 25 kills and 18 digs.
  • Caiola tied Agokie's total of four blocks.
  • Abreu paced the offense with 31 assists to go along with 12 digs.
  • Akindipe added seven kills and Mateo Patrick also scooped up 18 digs.  
Inside the Box Score
York hit .058 for the match on a season-high 156 attacks compared to a .041 rate on 148 attempts for the Cougars. While the Cardinals had the edge in kills (48-41), aces (14-6), and assists (46-37), Medgar Evers held a slight edge in solo blocks (11-10). Additionally, both teams finished tied in digs (65-65).
