York College plays host Tuesday (Mar. 5) to Hunter College in a CUNYAC home encounter

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball continued their CUNYAC slate with a home tri-match against the City College of New York Beavers (5-6, 2-3 CUNYAC) and the Lehman College Lightning (5-8, 3-2 CUNYAC). Improving every week, the Cardinals ultimately fell in four sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-11, 25-23) to the Beavers before the Lightning came away with a straight-set decision (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) inside York College Gymnasium.

Game 1: CCNY 3, York 1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23)

First Set Breakdown
  • CCNY got off to a quick 9-4 start.
  • An ace from George Molina and a kill by Alexis Ramirez for the Cardinals made the scoreline 9-7.
  • Stanley Sanchez's ace for York leveled the score at 13.
  • Going back-and-forth, a smackdown by York's Vincent Agokei evened it up at 17.
  • Gaining control, the Beavers went on a 5-0 burst helped by the serve of Cristian Canela.
  • A service ace from Alex Abraham closed out the first set 25-22 win.
Second Set Breakdown
  • York had a 5-2 lead after a kill by David Heyliger, Jr.
  • The Beavers responded with a 7-2 spurt to take a 9-7 advantage.
  • Battling back, a 6-1 scoring spree by the Cardinals put them up 13-10.
  • Buoyed by four Heyliger, Jr. kills, York generated a 19-11 edge.
  • Trailing 22-14, CCNY claimed five of the following six points to trim the deficit to four (23-19).
  • Ramirez's kill ended the stanza at 25-19.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Kills by Canela and Prabodh KC authored CCNY's 11-4 lead.
  • Leading 13-7, the Beavers went on an extended 10-5 blitz to take a 23-12 lead.
  • Charging back, York rattled off nine consecutive points to make it a 23-21 tense affair before CCNY eased the pressure by winning the final two points.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • A game of runs, a pair of kills by Ramirez and a kill by Marvin Mondesir gave York a 7-5 edge.
  • Up 11-9, fantastic combination play from Ramirez, Sanchez, and Heyliger, Jr. spearheaded the Cardinals to a 20-12 advantage.
  • Attempting a comeback, the Beavers cut it to three (22-19) before Heyliger, Jr.'s smackdown making it a 23-19 scoreline.
  • Taking command of the period, CCNY claimed the final six points to emerge victorious.  Leading the Cardinals.

  • Heyliger, Jr. set career-highs in points (31), kills (25), total attacks (54), hitting percentage (.259), and digs (14). 
  • Ramirez contributed a career-high 16 kills and 20 digs.
  • Sanchez orchestrated the offense with a career-best 37 assists. 
  • Ahmed Algendy chipped in on the defensive side with 10 digs.
  • Agokei totaled two aces.
For CCNY
  • Brandon Green produced a team-leading 13 kills and scooped up 10 digs.
  • KC swatted down nine kills with a stout .400 attack ratio.
  • Abraham had team-highs in total attacks (27) and dogs (16).
  • Reng Chen paced the offense with 25 assists.

York attacked at a season-best rate of .092, while the Beavers hit .140. Despite the loss, the Cardinals held advantages in major categories such as points (64-50), kills (46-35), assists (43-31), and digs (64-56).

Game 2: Lehman 3, York 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17)

First Set Breakdown
  • Lehman got out to an early 5-1 lead helped by two kills from Andrew Figueroa.
  • Two kills by Ramirez trimmed York's deficit to three (8-5).
  • Leading 9-6, a commanding 8-2 burst from the Lightning gave them a 10-point lead (18-8).
  • Trailing 24-12, York claimed four consecutive points before a kill by Emmanuel Oladuso ended the set.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Lehman got out to another ealy edge of 6-2. 
  • Ahead 8-5, the Lightning went on a 7-1 spurt to lead by nine (15-6).
  • York hovered around the 8-10 point margin, as Amir Pepic's smack down for Lehman sealed the stanza at 25-15.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Two aces from Heyliger, Jr. gave York a 3-1 advantage.
  • Trailing 8-5, the Cardinals went on a 4-0 burst to take a one-point advantage (9-8).
  • Lehman responded with a 5-0 burst to lead by four (13-9).
  • Inching closer, a pair of kills by Heyliger, Jr. made the scoreline 16-15 Lehman.
  • Taking control, the Lightning won nine of the final 11 points to emerge victorious 25-17.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. finished with a team-best 11 kills, 28 attacks, and two aces.
  • Ramirez tallied seven kills and a team-leading nine digs.
  • Sanchez manufactured 18 assists. 
  • Algendy accumulated seven digs.
For Bryn Athyn
  • Ray Rodriguez generated 12 points on nine kills and three aces, while also scooping up a game-high 11 digs.
  • Neithan Pilay and Alain Esteva each produced five kills.
  • Christian Agudo recorded seven digs and 24 assists.
  • Libero Jimmy Evans helped the defensive proficiency with eight digs.

York hit -.013 on 80 attempts as Lehman attacked at .221 on 77 swings. Outside of the scoreline, the Lightning had the edge in points (44-22), kills (29-19), aces (12-3), assists (27-19), and digs (40-30).
