www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball completed their season series Thursday evening with the Hunter College Hawks (11-8, 9-1), putting in a valiant effort in a three-set (25-14, 25-15, 25-12) CUNYAC setback from Hunter Sportsplex.
First Set Breakdown
- A closely contested opening frenzy consisting of 10 ties and five lead changes in the first-20 points, a kill by Hunter's Demetri Gournelos leveled the score at 10.
- The Cardinals took their final lead of the stanza (11-10) after a smack down from David Heyliger, Jr.
- Even at 12, the Hawks took command, closing the set on a 13-2 burst that was spearheaded by six-consecutive aces by Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye.
Second Set Breakdown
- With the score knotted at 2-all, Hunter utilized a 10-0 spurt to lead 12-2.
- Trading points, a pair of kills by Vincent Agokei and three from Heyliger, Jr. trimmed the deficit to single digits (21-12).
- George Lucas' kill for Hunter sealed the set at 25-15
Third Set Breakdown
- The Hawks got off to a strong 9-3 start.
- Ahead 11-6, Hunter pushed its lead to 11 (17-6) following a 6-0 scoring spree.
- After a smackdown by Heyliger, Jr. made it a 10-point scoreline (17-7), the Cardinals never got it closer, as once against Lucas' kill closed out a 25-12 victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- For the sixth time this season, Heyliger, Jr. reached double-digits in kills, finishing with a match-high 10 nail downs, and chipped in seven digs (match-high) and a solo block.
- Stanley Sanchez handed out 11 assists to direct York's offense.
- Glenver Stuart served York's lone ace and was credited with a block assist.
- Agokei added two kills and Ahmed Algendy scooped three digs.
For Hunter
- Al-Amine Mbaye went for a match-leading 13 points, finishing with seven kills and six aces to pace Hunter.
- Gournelos followed with 10 points on seven kills, four block assists and one ace.
- Cooper Moran steered Hunter's offense with 29 assists.
Inside the Box Score
On the whole, York hit -.085 on 59 swings, compared to Hunter attacking at a rate of .357 on 70 attempts. Hunter also owned the edge in points (56-17), kills (38-14), aces (10-1), blocks (8-2), assists (34-12) and digs (19-14).
