@yorkcardinals Softball breaks out the bats to sweep Yeshiva

York College continues its eight-game road trip Saturday (Mar. 23) with a non-conference tilt against Purchase College

BRONX, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball remained on the road Sunday evening with a non-conference doubleheader against the Yeshiva University Maccabees (0-6) from Fordham University's Bahoshy Field.  The Cardinals continued to dominate Yeshiva in 2024, claiming a 24-8 game one win, followed by a 17-4 triumph to claim the sweep in dominating fashion.

Game 1: York 24, Yeshiva 8
  • The Cardinals broke the scoring ice early with a pair of runs off Yeshiva starter Alexis Leibowitz (0-5: 4 IP, 18 R, 8 ER, 11 H, 8 BB, 4 SO) in the first inning.  Sofia Soric (3-for-5, 4 R, 3 RBI, BB, 3 SB) trotted across home plate with on a passed ball, and four batters later, York doubled its advantage when Michelle Mancuso (2-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB) scored off the bat of Samantha Panameno (1-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB).
  • Ayana Saavedra (W, 1-0: 5 IP, 6 H, 8 BB, SO) made her debut in the circle for York, allowing a single, handing out three walks and hitting two batters in a first inning that saw Yeshiva jump in front, 4-2.
  • Trailing 5-2, York sent 20 batters to the plate to answer with 16 runs in the third inning.  A two-out rally saw York push across eight more runs in the frame, highlighted by a big fly by Andrea Wright (3-for-4, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, 2 SB) that scored three.  The inning also featured run-scoring triples from Soric and Lissenny Florentino, as well as RBI doubles by Panameno, Remedios Garcia (2-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, 3 SB) and Madison Plaza (1-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 3 SB).
  • York tacked on six more runs to extend its advantage in the fifth as Mancuso and Emperatriz Cesar (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 8 SB) both delivered RBI doubles.
  • Saavedra found her form to toss a scoreless fourth on her way to collecting her first-career win.
  • The Cardinals finished with a season-high 24 runs, 23 stolen bases, 20 RBI, five doubles and 12 walks, while also playing a clean game defensively with zero fielding errors for the first time since March 23, 2022 against Purchase College.
Game 2: York 17, Yeshiva 4
  • York put up a four spot on Leibowitz (0-6: 4.1 IP, 12 ER, 6 BB, 9 SO) in the opening frame. Soric (1-for-4, R, RBI, BB, SB) scored following an RBI single by Florentino (1-for-4, R, RBI, BB, 3 SB), who subsequently crossed the plate following two stolen bases and a ground out by Mancuso (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, SB). Wright's first-career dinger made the score 3-0 and Tyler Dazey (2-for-3, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 SB) reached home base via a wild pitch after she smacked a triple to right field.
  • Stranding a runner on third base, Saavedra (W, 1-0: 5 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 6 SO) retired three consecutive Maccabee hitters to keep the scoreline at 4-0 in the bottom of the first.
Pesky baserunning from Jasmin Rodriguez (1-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 SB) gave York a 5-0 advantage in the second frame.
  • Singles by Dazey and Panameno (1-for-2, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB) guided a two-run top of the third for York.
  • Saavedra plunked Yeshiva's Tali Schimmel and Rebecca's Kalmar in the bottom of the third, making it 7-2 heading into the fourth.
  • A two-RBI base knock by Rodriguez in the top of the fourth extended the Cardinals' edge to nine (11-2).
  • Putting the game out of reach, Soric's RBI triple capped off a six-run inning by York, extending the lead to 17-2.
  • Saavedra worked around a little trouble in the bottom of the fifth to record her second consecutive complete game.
  • Overall, York maintained their offensive explosion with 11 hits (3 XBH), 10 RBI, nine walks, and 13 stolen bases.
