@yorkcardinals Softball cracks open road slate at Valley Forge

York College continues its non-conference road schedule Sunday (Mar. 17) with a showdown against Yeshiva University

PHOENIXVILLE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened their road schedule Saturday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge Patriots from UVF Field.  The Cardinals' six hits on the day were not enough as costly errors provided Valley Forge with a 15-0 win in the opener before completing the series with a 17-1 decision.

Game 1: Valley Forge 15, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • The Cardinals tested UVF hurler Laura Medio (W, 3-3: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 SO) in the first inning as Lissenny Florentino (1-for-2) and Michelle Mancuso worked the count to draw walks.
  • Two batters later, Faith Howes (1-for-2) drilled a clutch single to load the bases, before Medio escaped out of the jam by ringing up Andrea Wright for one of her six strikeouts in the game.
  • Valley Forge jumped ahead in the home half of the first with a two-out single by Ava Page to drive in Harley Wakeman for the game-winning run off Garcia (L, 2-3: 4 IP, 7 H, 11ER, 2 BB, 3 SO).
  • From there, Medio limited York to a pair of base runners with Florentino's third inning base knock, and a fifth inning single and stolen base by Jasmin Rodriguez (1-for-2).
  • The Patriots went off in the second for six runs and added eight more in the third to settle the scoring.
Game 2: Valley Forge 17, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Once again, York applied pressure in the first inning.  Emperatriz Cesar (2-for-2, 2 SB, third multi-hit game of the season) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a fielding error by shortstop Marissa Urner (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI).  The Cardinals were unable to advance Cesar home on an inning ending ground out by Howes.
  • Valley Forge put the game away early with a 17-run opening frame as the Patriots erupted for 12 hits and capitalized on three Cardinal miscues.
  • Caitlyn Fisher (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) broke the scoring ice with a leadoff homer.
  • Three batters later, Page (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) singled home Urner for what proved to be the game-winning run.
  • After a taxing first inning, Garcia (L, 2-4: 4 IP, 16 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, SO) settled down to toss scoreless second, third and fourth innings.
  • Garcia (1-for-2, R, 3 SB) stroked a leadoff single and stole second in the fourth inning off Wakeman (W, 2-1: 5 IP, 3 H, ER, 9 SO).  In scoring position, Garcia swept third and home to put York on the board.
