@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball breaks open home slate against Valley Forge

York College continues its non-conference schedule next Saturday (Feb. 17) with a road tri-match against Bryn Athyn College and Purchase College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball served up their 2024 home slate Friday evening against the University of Valley Forge Patriots (4-2), falling in straight sets (25-14, 25-12, 25-23) in a non-conference showdown from York College Gymnasium. 

First Set Breakdown
  • A kill by Valley Forge's Clay Confer put the Patriots up 7-2.
  • Trailing 12-4, York hung in there, claiming four of the following eight points to make the score 16-8.
  • Despite kills by the Cardinals' David Heyliger, Jr. and Vincent Akogei, Valley Forge closed out the set with a calm 25-14 result.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Three kills by Confer sparked the Patriots to a 12-3 edge.
  • Trailing 16-5, York went on a mini 4-2 spurt to cut the deficit to single digits (18-9).
  • Two smackdowns from Nathan Whisman helped give Valley Forge a 25-12 victory.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Patriots took an early 5-2 advantage.
  • Roaring back, kills by Heyliger, Jr., Akogei, and Stanley Sanchez spearheaded a 6-2 blitz to give the Cardinals a 8-7 lead.
  • Trading blows, York maintained a 12-10 and 13-11 edge, before Valley Forge claimed three consecutive points to go up 14-13.
  • A 5-2 charge put the Cardinals back up by two (18-16).
  • Trailing 20-19, a 5-1 burst gave the Patriots a 24-21 edge.
  • Attempting to come back, Ahmed Algendy's unfortunate set error at 24-23 ended York's hopes.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. accounted for a match-high 10 points, eight kills, and 34 total attacks.
  • Ahmed Algendy moved York's offense by distributing a career-high 14 assists to his Cardinal teammates. 
  • Sanchez scooped up a match-best 10 digs.
  • Agokei added three kills and three digs.
  • Alexis Ramirez totaled three points and four digs.
For Valley Forge
  • Toby Harris produced a team-leading nine points (five kills, three aces, one block) and scooped up seven digs.
  • Confer spiked paced the team in kills (6) and digs (8).
  • Whisman generated five kills and two block assists.
  • Tyler Younger had a team-best 17 total attacks.
  • Jordan Kieffer tied Confer's mark of eight digs while Paul Brown registered 13 assists.
Inside the Box Score
York attacked at a rate of -.118 while the Patriots swung at .206. Valley Forge had the advantage in kills (25-14), aces (8-4), assists (23-14), and digs (32-26), while the Cardinals recorded more total attacks (76-68).
