York College returns to action Thursday (Feb. 22) in a non-conference home battle against Sarah Lawrence College

PURCHASE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball continued their non-conference slate Saturday with a tri-match hosted by Purchase College.  The Cardinals scored a season-best total of 17 points in a set but were outplayed in the first match, falling in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-8) to the host Panthers (3-2) before Bryn Athyn College Lions (6-7) came away with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17 25-13) decision inside Purchase College Gymnasium.

Game 1: Purchase 3, York 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-8)
First Set Breakdown
  • A 3-0 run from the Cardinals saw them take an early 5-4 lead.
  • Purchase responded with an extended 7-3 burst to take an 11-8 edge.
  • York leveled the score at 12 with the help of kills by David Heyliger, Jr. and Vincent Agokei
  • The Panthers pulled away with a 9-3 spurt to a comfortable six-point lead (21-15).
  • Maintaining a 22-17 advantage, Purchase claimed the final three points of the set.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Two kills from Heyliger, Jr. sparked an early 4-0 lead for York.
  • The Cardinals' stretched their edge to five (6-1) following a pair of attacking errors.
  • Swinging the set in their direction, the Panthers remained composed and leveled the score at seven.
  • Trading points, York held its last lead at 12-11.
  • Trailing 12-11, Purchase claimed six of the following seven points to take a 17-13 advantage.
  • With the score at 19-16, the Panthers closed out the stanza with six straight points.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Leading 10-5, Purchase effectively sealed the match with an 11-0 blitz.
  • York strung together three consecutive points, but it was not enough as the Panthers sealed a 25-8 set victory. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. hit a season-best .100 to pace the Cardinals with nine points from eight kills on 20 swings and one block.  
  • Stanely Sanchez produced career-highs of three aces and 15 assists, in addition to scooping five digs.
  • Alexis Ramirez totaled a career-high six kills. 
For Purchase 
  • Tyler Ryan and Channing Williams each compiled a match-leading 9.5 points. 
  • Jael Martinez and Udel Phillips both followed with nine points.

York attacked at a season-best rate of -.034 while the Panthers hit .389. Purchase also held the edge in points (49-21), kills (29-16), aces (16-3), assists (29-15), blocks (4-2) and digs (23-16).  

Game 2: Bryn Athyn 3, York 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13)
First Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals took a quick 6-2 edge on the serve of Heyliger, Jr. 
  • A Bryn Athyn service error maintained a 7-4 edge for York.
  • Roaring back, a 10-1 charge helped spark the Lions to a 14-8 edge.
  • Following a York attack error, the Lions grabbed their first double-digit lead (20-10) of the match,
  • A kill by Bryn Athyn's Teegan Dewees clinched a 25-14 set triumph.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Two kills by Heyliger, Jr. put the Cardinals up 3-2.
  • A back-and-forth stanza, York leveled the score at 6-6, 8-8, and 10-10.
  • Bryn Athyn took the lead for good (11-10) after a smack down from Blake Halterman. 
  • Leading 13-12, the Lions went on a 6-1 burst to give a six-point scoring margin (19-13), before claiming a comfortable 25-17 win.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Lions held a controlling 12-4 edge prior to any substitutions. 
  • Kills by Heyliger, Jr. and Agokei made it a 13-7 scoreline.
  • A 10-2 burst from Bryn Athyn effectively put the stanza out of reach for York at 23-9.
  • Heyliger, Jr. attempted a comeback with two kills, but the Lions concluded the match at 25-13.  
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. had seven kills and two aces as York's top points producer with 9.5 on the match. 
  • Sanchez dished out 10 assists and contributed one ace. 
  • Ramirez added five kills and five digs.  
  • George Molina provided a spark on the defensive end with a match-best seven digs (career-high).  
  • At the net, Vincent Agokei tallied a career-high 1.5 blocks.  
For Bryn Athyn
  • Bryan Choute paced Bryan Athyn with a match-best 14.5 points highlighted by 12 kills.  
  • Laban Genzlinger's 27 assists directed the Lions' offense. 
  • Adan Rodriguez-Sapien and Dewees each went for 10 points, serving four and three aces, respectively.  
Inside the Box Score
York finished the match hitting -.127 on 63 attempts as Bryn Athyn attacked at .371 on 70 swings.  The Cardinals owned the advantage in blocks (2-1) while Bryan Athyn controlled the play in points (46-20), kills (34-15), aces (11-3), assists (32-12) and digs (23-21).
