@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball begins 2024-25 campaign at WestConn

York College opens its home schedule Friday (Nov. 22) with a bout versus Bryn Athyn College

DANBURY, CT --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball began their 2024-25 season Saturday afternoon against Western Connecticut State University Wolves (1-2), falling 89-34 in a non-conference matchup from William A. O'Neill Athletic & Convocation Center.

How it Happened
  • A jumper from Nia Rencher capped off an 8-0 start for WestConn.
  • Controlling the first quarter, the Wolves went on a 13-2 run to lead 21-2 at the 2:19 mark.
  • Madison Plaza connected on York's first triple of the season to make the score 23-7 before Andrea Moulton's three-pointer ended the quarter at 26-7.
  • WestConn outpaced the Cardinals 18-11 in the second period to take a 44-18 edge into halftime.
  • Alyssa Virtue's three-point play with 5:35 remaining in the third period gave the Wolves their first 30-point advantage of the afternoon (50-20).
  • Alicia Gumbs canned her first downtown connection for York to end the third quarter at 62-25.
  • A 27-7 final stanza for WestConn finalized the 89-34 result.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs recorded team-highs in points (16), assists (3), and steals (3). 
  • Plaza added 10 points and seven rebounds.
  • Tyla Hooks grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds in her first career outing as a Cardinal.
  • Widmaelle Drouillard and Beautifull Earth both grabbed four rebounds.
For WestConn
  • Rencher produced a double-double with a team-leading 16 points (5-of-7 FG, 6-of-10 FT) and 12 rebounds. 
  • Fatmata Barrie netted 12 points (6-of-9 FG) and hauled in a game-high 15 boards.
  • Andrea Moulton drained four three-point baskets.
  • Xiamora Soto dished out a game-best five dimes, and Malaysia Dingle totaled five swipes. 
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 21.4 percent (2-of-56) from the floor, 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from deep, and 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from the charity stripe. WestConn drained 44.6 percent (33-of-74) of its shots and tallied 10 made triples and 13 free throws. In addition to the final score, the Wolves owned the rebound battle (60-32) and finished with more assists (21-5) and steals (10-1) than York. WestConn utilized its size and length to record 40 paint points and 30 points off turnovers.
