York College returns to home court Tuesday (Sept. 26) to take on University of Valley Forge in a non-conference bout

BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball battled Thursday evening against the St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) Bears (1-3), but were unable to keep pace with the hosts in a non-conference setback in straight sets (25-16, 25-5, 25-5) from The Hill Center.

First Set Breakdown
  • The Bears raced out to a 9-0 first set advantage driven by three aces from Rachel Meltsin.
  • York responded by claiming seven of the next eight points to make the score 10-7.
  • After a set of runs, St. Joseph's went on a 7-1 burst to take a 17-8 lead.
  • Trailing 24-11, the Cardinals won five consecutive points to put pressure on the Bears.
  • Martina Urgo's kill closed out a 25-16 first-set victory for St. Joseph's.
Second Set Breakdown
  • St. Joseph's claimed the first 10 points of the second stanza.
  • Ahead of 14-2, the Bears closed out the set on an 11-3 burst.
Third Set Breakdown
  • In the third set, a set error by Urgo got the Cardinals on the board at 3-1.
  • A later service error by the Bears made the score 11-3 in the final frame.
  • St. Joseph's finished the set winning 14 of the final 16 points.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Shamonie Miller energized York's attack with a team-high four kills and 16 swing attempts. 
  • Miller also recorded a team-leading five digs.
  • Cherub Autar set her teammates up with a team-best five assists
  • Autar and Madison Plaza each added one kill.
For St. Joseph's
  • Autumn Poppett paced the Bear attack with a game-high 10 kills.
  • Jillian McGinty added three kills and six aces.
  • Rachel Meltsin quarterbacked the attack with 18 assists to go along with a game-best seven aces.
  • Defensively, Carol Melo chipped in with six digs.

Inside the Box Score
York hit at a rate of .133 in the opening stanza before finishing the match attacking at -.204, compared to a clip of .313 for the Bears. St. Joseph's controlled the advantage in points (47-6), kills (24-6), aces (21-0), blocks (2-0), assists (23-5), and digs (25-13).
