Hodzic eclipses 1,000-point plateau to steer @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball past CCNY, 69-51

York College returns to home court Friday (Feb. 10) for a CUNYAC showdown against Hunter College on Alumni Appreciation / Senior Day

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball produced their 10th member of the 1,000-point club Wednesday as senior guard Ellma Hodzic scored 21 points to lead the Cardinals to a 69-51 CUNYAC road win against the City College of New York Beavers (4-18, 2-10 CUNYAC) inside Nat Holman Gymnasium. 

With 3:42 remaining in the third period, Hodzic drained a 3-pointer to net her 16th point of the game to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in the Queens native's 87th-career game.

The Cardinals have now swept the season series from the Beavers for the third consecutive season, winning 63-24 in their previous meeting in January. 

How it Happened
  • CCNY took a 9-4 lead at the 4:49 mark in the first quarter following a Monae Laing layup.
  • York responded with a 12-4 run to lead by three (16-13) late in the frame.
  • Fatoumata Nantume's jumper at the buzzer pulled CCNY within one (16-15) heading into the second quarter. 
  • A defensive battle in the second frame, Joscelyn Ramos' bucket for CCNY with 2:24 remaining trimmed the score to York 23-21.
  • The Cardinals went on a 6-0 spurt to end the half with a  29-21 advantage as Mac-Dege Dessources' layup at the horn capped off four quickfire points in the final three seconds.
  • Leading 33-27, York pulled away with a 13-2 burst to go up by 17 (46-29) at the third.
  • Alicia Gumbs' jumper with 3:54 left in regulation gave the Cardinals a game-high 23-point (62-39) advantage.
  • York played with a double-digit cushion for the final 19:06 to coast to an 18-point win.
Inside the Box Score
Hodzic went for a season-high 21 points (8-of-23 FG, 3-of-11 3FG) to go along with eight rebounds and game-highs of seven steals and six assists. Dessources recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 13 points (6-of-9 FG) and 11 rebounds. Gumbs tallied 13 points (5-of-14 FG), three assists and three steals. Kristina Sierra scored nine of her 11 points (4-of-11 FG) in the first half and added five assists and two steals to her stat line.

Laing paced the Beavers with 21 points (9-of-23 FG) and a game-best 14 boards. Kasia Morrison totaled 19 points (6-of-19 FG, 2-of-8 3FG, 5-of-8 FT) and six boards. Leondra Carig hauled in eight boards and dished out a team-best five dimes.  

York shot 38.6 percent (27-of-70) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the free-throw line. Pesky Cardinal defense held CCNY to 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor and 19 percent (4-of-21) from downtown.

While CCNY held the edge on the glass (47-40), York outplayed the Beavers in assists (18-11), blocks (5-0), steals (17-6), points off turnovers (19-7) and points in the paint (32-20).
