@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball charge early in regular-season finale at Brooklyn

York College returns to the court Saturday (Feb. 18) as the fifth-seed on the road against No. 4 Baruch College in a CUNYAC Championship first-round matchup

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball started in attack mode Tuesday evening, holding a six-point lead at halftime, but did not sustain their play, falling 85-70 in the regular-season finale to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (17-7, 14-0 CUNYAC) inside West Quad Center Gymnasium. Brooklyn swept the season series with the Cardinals, winning a contested 69-64 road showdown in January. 

How it Happened
  • York scored a season-high 29 points in the first quarter, leading 29-17 after the first frame.
  • Ellma Hodzic's three-pointer at the 6:31 mark put the Cardinals up by a team high 15 points (37-22).
  • Brooklyn utilized a 15-1 to cut the deficit to one (38-37) with 1:29 remaining in the half.
  • Imani Gibson's putback with 36 seconds left gave York a 43-37 advantage at intermission.
  • Brooklyn outscored the Cardinals by 11 in the third stanza as York last led 49-46 with 7:41 left.
  • The Bulldogs canned four triples to level the score 10 seconds later at 49, and jumped ahead for good at the 6:08 mark to play ahead for the final 16:08.
  • Gianna Gotti's layup with third-quarter clock showing 1:49 sent the Bulldogs into the fourth ahead by five (60-55).
  • Nancy Pham's bucket for Brooklyn with 4:06 remaining in the contest gave the Bulldogs their first double-digit advantage (73-62).
  • The Cardinals were unable to cut the deficit to less than nine points the rest of the way, as the Bulldogs prevailed with the 15-point victory.
Inside the Box Score
Mac-Dege Dessources paced York with 22 points (7-of-17 FG, 8-of-13 FG), 15 rebounds (nine offensive), two steals, and one block while playing a season-high 40 minutes. Alicia Gumbs turned in a great display, scoring 19 points (7-of-10 FG, 4-of-4 FT) and grabbing six boards. Ellma Hodzic added 16 points (6-of-14 FG, 4-of-4 FT), seven boards, and team-highs in assists (7) and blocks (3). Aminata Sagna and Kristina Sierra ripped down seven and six rebounds, respectively.   

Gotti, Ericka James and Dasha Goodman did the heavy lifting for Brooklyn. Gotti led the way with 21 points (9-of-25 FG, 2-of-7 FT), seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. James chipped in with 20 points (8-of-14 FG, 2-of-3 3FG), five boards, four assists and two steals. Goodman poured in 20 points (6-of-12 3FG).

The Cardinals shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from downtown, and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the charity stripe. Brooklyn had similar splits, converting 38.8 percent (33-of-85) of its field goals, 37.5 percent (12-of-32) of its triples, and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) of its freebies.  

York had the edge in rebounds (46-42) and blocks (5-0), but the Bulldogs outperformed them in assists (22-14) and steals (13-5). Additionally, Brooklyn outmaneuvered York in second-chance points (17-15), fast break scoring (15-12), points in the paint (32-28), and points off turnovers (30-10).

The Cardinals (11-11) return to postseason play Saturday (Feb. 18) for the third-straight season, matching up against the No. 4 Baruch College Bearcats (14-11) on the road at 3 p.m. from ARC Arena in the first round of the CUNYAC Championship. Baruch claimed victory over York on January 3 (57-53) and January 31 (69-55).
