JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball sizzled out of the opening gates Thursday evening on home court to lead by 18 at intermission against the Amherst College Mammoths (6-3), but were unable to carry the momentum as the visitors escaped with a 72-67 non-conference win inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Rohan Singh drained a 3-pointer 4:03 in to give the Cardinals an early 7-0 edge.
- A jumper by Aidony Nivar at the 11:30 mark pushed York's lead to 17-6.
- Leading 29-21, the Cardinals went on an 11-0 run capped off by Nivar's jumper to go up 40-21 with 4:55 remaining in the first half.
- Two freebies by Singh ended the first-half scoring with York up 18 (45-28).
- Amherst started the second half on an 18-5 charge, cutting the deficit to five (50-45) at the 13:32 mark.
- The Mammoths took their first lead of the game (56-54) after Will Scherer's layup with over six minutes remaining.
- Trading baskets, Singh's tough layup with 2:31 remaining leveled the score at 64.
- After a layup by Scherer, Olawale Kila responded at the other end with a jumper to make the score 66-66.
- Ahead 68-66, C.J. Mitchell hit a dagger 3-pointer with 27 seconds to give the Mammoths a 71-66 lead.
- Mitchell's free throw with 13 seconds on the clock secured a 72-67 victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Micaiah Goosby led the Cardinals with a season-high 17 points (7-of-12 FG) and two steals.
- Singh finished with a season-high 13 points (3-of-4 3FG) to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
- Nivar chipped in with 12 points (5-9 FG) and tallied six boards.
- Tafari Jerome dished out a career-best 10 assists along with nine points and two steals.
- Tyres Desinor added 11 points (5-8 FG) off the bench and recorded the lone block for the Cardinal defense.
For Amherst
- Scherer finished with a game-high 19 points (8-of-13 FG, 3-of-4 FT), 14 rebounds, and four blocks.
- Mitchell netted 18 points (6–of-11 FG, 5-of-8 3FG).
- Vance Ryker hauled in 12 rebounds and distributed a team-best six assists.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field, 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from behind the arc and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the free-throw line. Amherst shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from 3-point territory, and 65 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe. Amherst also held the edge in rebounds (45-27), assists (21-19), blocks (8-1). York held the advantage in steals (8-4), allowing them to outscore Amherst in fast break points (7-6). Using their height advantage, the Mammoths had a +12 (28-16) margin in points in the paint and outmaneuvered York 9-5 in second-chance scoring.
