Second-half surge sparks @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball in home opener against Rosemont

York College continues its home slate Tuesday (Nov. 28) with a non-conference matchup against Wesleyan University

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened their home slate Tuesday evening as a ferocious second-half comeback came up short against the Rosemont College Ravens (1-5), falling 60-43 in a non-conference bout inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Melanie Guerrero sank a jumper 2:44 in to put York on the board at 5-2.
  • Rosemont went on an 18-2 blitz over the next six-plus minutes to lead 23-2.
  • Alicia Gumbs canned a jumper for York with eight seconds left in the first quarter to make it 23-4.
  • Behind 30-6, the Cardinals went on a 9-0 charge in the final 5:26 to trim the deficit to 15 (30-15) as Gumbs capped off the scoring with a tough jumper with four seconds left in the half. 
  • A 12-4 burst to open the third quarter gave Rosemont a second-half high 23-point edge (42-19).
  • The Cardinals closed the third period on a 9-2 surge over the final five minutes to cut Rosemont's lead to 16 (44-28) off the power of three free-throws by Gumbs to end the spurt. 
  • Buoyed by long range bombs from Guerrero, Gumbs and Madison Plaza, the Cardinals trimmed the score to 45-39 with just under six minutes remaining in the game by using a 20-3 charge to make it a two possession affair.
  • Rosemont responded with a 9-1 scoring spree to extend its advantage to 14 (54-40) at the 3:32 mark. 
  • Defending well, the Ravens held York to three points in the final minutes to win 60-43.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs paced York with 27 points (8-of-24 FG, 10-of-12 FT), 14 rebounds (career-high), five assists and four steals to post her first-career double-double.
  • Guerrero netted a career-best 12 points (5-of-10 FG, 2-of-4 3FG).
  • Plaza hauled in eight rebounds while Simone Robinson nabbed three steals.
For Rosemont
  • Mojishola Shokeye stuffed the stat sheet with a team-best 21 points (8-of-19 FG, 4-of-7 3FG) to go along with 12 boards, seven assists and four steals.
  • Lakay Holloway added 10 points and five steals.
  • Myora Slaughter totaled a game-leading 16 rebounds. 
  • Danaijah Wise scored 10 points (5-of-11 FG) while Myliah Shorter reached the 11-rebound mark. 
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot a season-best 25.9 percent (14-of-54) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from beyond the arc and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the charity stripe. Rosemont connected on 33.3 percent (26-of-28) percent from the floor, shooting triples at a 26.7 percent (4-of-15) clip, and free throws at 57.1 percent (4-of-7). 

The Ravens dominated inside, owning a 58-29 rebounding edge, helping them score 11 second-chance points off 23 offensive boards. Rosemont also enjoyed a 34-10 advantage in points in the paint. In the open floor, the Ravens accumulated 17 assists and totaled 23 points off turnovers.
