www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball closed out their two-game road trip Saturday afternoon as
Alicia Gumbs dominated but the Cardinals were unable to keep up with the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (1-2), falling 75-42 in a non-conference matchup inside Clark Athletic Center.
How it Happened
- Gumbs sank a jumper 2:26 in to put York on the board to make it a 5-2 game.
- Old Westbury went on a 13-1 scoring spree to push the lead to 18-3 after one quarter of play.
- York clamped down in the second period to limit Old Westbury to 11 points.
- Gumbs netted six more points and Melanie Guerrero drained a jumper before Old Westbury scored four-unanswered points in the final 1:10 to edge York by four in the second.
- Trailing 29-11 at the break, York outplayed the Panthers over the next 10 minutes by shooting 50 percent from the floor to own a 17-15 third-quarter scoring edge.
- Old Westbury raced out of the second-half gates to score seven-straight points.
- Both teams traded baskets over a stretch of 2:05 before Gumbs went to work by scoring 11 of her 15 third-quarter points to spark a 13-2 run over the remaining 3:52 that trimmed the deficit to 16 points (44-28).
- The Panthers responded in the final stanza by shooting 63.6 percent from the field to outscore York by 17 (31-14).
- Gumbs registered York's first field goal of the quarter 4:11 in as Old Westbury used a 31-3 spurt to stretch the lead to 26 (57-31).
- The two squads played even until Old Westbury closed out the final 2:06 with a 9-2 surge to seal the victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs finished with a career-high 32 points (13-of-32 FG, 6-of-8 FT) to go along with three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 40 minutes of action.
- Madison Plaza chipped in six points and a career-best 10 rebounds (four offensive).
- Guerrero and Nadaysia Nivar each grabbed five boards.
For Old Westbury
- Phalan Smith paced Old Westbury to victory with 30 points (14-of-24 FG), six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block.
- Fatima Thompson contributed 19 points (9-of-14 FG), 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
- Sierra Rowe dished out six assists while Malaura Olivier and Allysha Thomas both scored eight points.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 34 percent (16-of-47) from the field and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point territory. Old Westbury connected on 41.5 percent (34-of-82) from the floor, 18.5 percent (5-of-27) from downtown and 33.3 percent (2-of-6) from the stripe. The Panthers won the boards battle, 52-35, and scored 17 second-chance points off 27 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury also owned the edge in assists (21-2), blocks (3-0) and steals (9-1).
