Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Conde’s second-half goal boosts @yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer to 2-1 CUNYAC win over Medgar Evers

York College remains on the road Saturday (Oct. 21) to take on Five Towns College in a non-conference encounter

BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer battled Thursday afternoon on the road against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-11-2, 0-5-1 CUNYAC), turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 triumph in their CUNYAC finale from Aviator Field. This is the Cardinals' first win since a November 2022 1-0 nailbiter against the City College of New York.

"I am so happy for the boys. Despite missing some key players, the York boys believed they could do it today."-said head coach Brahim Chhab

First-Half Breakdown
  • The Cougars attacked from the jump, forcing York netminder George Molina (1-4-0) into three tough saves in the opening 22 minutes.
  • Medar Evers got in the scoring column at the 22:50 mark after Mike Eliacin pounced on a corner kick.
  • Growing into the match, the Cardinals equalized in the 35th minute when Anuar Arias evaded three defenders and curled a shot into the far corner past goalkeeper Rene Sanchez (0-3-1).
  • Arias' strike was his first career goal and shot on target.
  • Attempting to retake the lead, shots by Kazundu Small and Mamadou Bah were denied by the flying Molina.
Second-Half Breakdown
  • Molina became Superman-like five minutes in, stopping a deflected free-kick from Daniel Hackett and a point-black rebound by Jamar Anderson.
  • York took the lead seven minutes later when Alex Conde headed home his first-career goal after finding space at the back post from a Kervin Mondesir free-kick.
  • Holding on tightly to the 2-1 advantage, York limited the Cougars to eight shots but only two on goal in the final 32 minutes of action.

"I decided to play with three centre-backs and two full backs due to the absence of Mohammad and Stanley. This tactical switch made it easy for us to defend, stay compact, and leave no space for the opponent. I am glad we are finishing the seson with this win and also a noticable improvement."-commented coach Chhab

Inside the Box Score
Statistically speaking, Medger Evers held the edge in shots (25-13), shots on target (12-5), and corners (7-1). Molina collected 11 shots for his first-career win, while Sanchez recorded three stops for the Cougars.
