@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball battles Baruch in CUNYAC home opener

York College squares off against John Jay College in a road CUNYAC affair on Friday (Jan. 6)

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball lost to the Baruch College Bearcats (7-6, 1-1 CUNYAC) 57-53 to open up its home CUNYAC campaign Tuesday evening inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • York raced out to a 7-0 start.
  • Mia Castillo's jumper for Baruch at 1:39 ended the first quarter scoring, with the Cardinals leading 17-12.
  • The Bearcats took their first lead of the match, as Castillo's turn around jumper with 1:59 remaining in the half put them up 21-20.
  • Alicia Gumbs converted a free throw with 0:12 showing on the clock to cut York's deficit to three (25-22).
  • Overall, Baruch outscored York 13-5 in the second quarter. 
  • Mac-Dege Dessources' six consecutive points for York helped the Cardinals turn a 34-31 deficit into a three-point lead (37-34) at the 3:03 mark.
  • The Cardinals entered the fourth quarter with a 39-36 advantage, as Ellma Hodzic's layup with 49 seconds left ended the scoring.
  • Baruch started the fourth quarter on a 11-3 run, taking a 47-42 lead. 
  • York cut the deficit to one twice, as baskets by Gumbs and  Hodzic made the score 47-46 and 49-48 Baruch, respectively.
  • Castillo's two free throws with 0:24 showing on the clock capped off a 5-0 run to extend the Bearcats' lead to six (54-48).
  • Kristina Sierra's triple with three seconds remaining cut Baruch's lead to two (55-53).
  • Elissa Leung sealed the game by making two consecutive free throws, with Baruch winning 57-53.
Inside the Box Score
Dessources led York with 19 points (9-of-13 FG), 12 rebounds, and three assists. Hodzic also produced double-digit points, scoring 10 points and totaling a team-high four steals. Sierra chipped in with eight points (2-of-5 3FG) and gathered a career-high 11 boards. Aminata Sagna hauled in 10 rebounds and paced the Cardinals with two steals. 

Castillo was the spark for Baruch, scoring a game-best 28 points (10-of-26 FG, 7-of-9 FT) hauling in six rebounds, dishing out five dimes, and tallying a game-high four steals. D'Andre McRae scored 11 points (5-of-7 FG), gathered a team-best 12 boards, and added two steals. Leung matched Castillo's total of five assists and recorded two steals as well.

For the game, York shot 42.3 percent (22-of-53) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 40 percent (4-of-10) from the charity stripe. The Cardinals' defense restricted Baruch to 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and 11.5 percent (3-of-26) from long distance.

Along with a shooting edge, the Cardinals won the rebounding battle (44-30) and dominated the paint scoring (30-22). Baruch won this game due to the turnover disparity, committing 13 turnovers as opposed to York's 26. The Bearcats turned 26 giveaways into 17 points, while the Cardinals finished with only seven points off turnovers. In addition, Baruch had more fast-break points (16-5).
