JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball opened the 2022 season Thursday evening at home, squaring off against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-2). The Cardinals (0-1) fell to the Cougars in straight sets (25-22, 25-13, 30–28) inside York College Gymnasium, snapping a two-match winning streak against Medgar Evers dating back to 2019.
Trailing 3-0 to open the match, York strung together a 7-0 spurt as part of a 19-9 run to go up by seven (19-12). Medger Evers responded with a 13-3 run, including six unanswered points to take the first set. During a second stanza that featured three lead changes and five ties, the Cougars scored 19 of the final 24 points to earn the set point. Both teams combined for 15 ties and eight lead changes in the third set before the Cougars rallied to win the final two points.
Shamonie Miller paced York with a match-high seven points and six kills to go along with one ace.
Andrea Wright followed with five kills. Leading the charge was
Emily Cabrera, who served a match-high three aces as
Nadaysia Nivar swept two serves past the opposition.
Quaria Brye Bey tallied five kills as Cristina Carnegie earned four points while Raine Willaims came in clutch with a match-leading five aces and five digs to pace Medgar Evers.
The Cardinals held the edge in points (23-10), kills (17-9), and assists (17-8) as Medgar Evers capitalized on York's 18 service errors to outplay the hosts in aces (11-6), digs (9-8). The Cardinals finished with the advantage in attacking (-.137 to -.316).
The Cardinals travel to Brooklyn College (1-2) on Saturday (Sept. 10) to open up CUNYAC play with a tri-match starting at 10 a.m. against the Hunter College Hawks (2-0), followed by the host Bulldogs at noon inside West Quad Gymnasium.
