@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball opens CUNYAC play at Baruch

York College remains on the road Saturday (Sept. 17) for a non-conference doubleheader at University of Valley Forge

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball fell in straight sets on the road Thursday evening by the count of 25-6, 25-10, 25-4 to the Baruch College Bearcats (4-4, 1-0 CUNYAC) as the Cardinals (0-2, 0-1 CUNYAC) opened their CUNYAC slate inside ARC Arena.

"We came into today with no expectations and with one goal, to play as a team. Though we did not win, we fought and hustled until the last point. Today's team captain Shamonie Miller remained positive, played aggressively, and exuded leadership throughout. She led this very young and inexperienced team, and carried them through the game. For us, this is just the beginning!" - said head coach Christy Herring.

After both teams started with service errors, York was unable to gather a foothold in the set, as Baruch followed with an 11-0 run. As the Bearcats had nine aces and seven kills, the Cardinals' only kill in the first set came when Cherub Autar deftly tapped a winner over the initial defense to make it 15-3. Winning the first set by 19, the Bearcats' powerful serves and attacks proved too much for the Cardinals in the second and third sets.

In addition to her first set kill, Autar recorded York's lone ace and was second on the team with four digs. Shamonie Miller led the match with six digs. Also recording kills were Naomi Heras Picon and Nadaysia Nivar, both controlling shots that evaded Baruch's backline.

Sarah Chung led the charge for Baruch, whose aces early in the first set provided the tone for the rest of the match. Lizaveta Kushner added three aces and a match-high eight kills, while Fernanda Zamora tallied a match-best 14 assists. Controlling the pace, libero Jaylen Herchenroder made no errors, had a team-high five digs, and even served three aces.

Baruch dominated in points (45-4), kills (21-3), aces (23-1), and assists (20-2). The Bearcats also finished with the advantage in attacking (.400 to -.379).

The Cardinals travel to Pennsylvania to face the University of Valley Forge Patriots (0-4) in a doubleheader on Saturday at The Pit. The upcoming matchup between the programs is only the second in school history, with the Patriots claiming victory in 2019.
