@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball opens CUNYAC home slate against CCNY

York College returns to home court Thursday (Sept. 22) for a non-conference affair with St. Joseph’s University (Brooklyn)

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com)  York College women's volleyball returned home Tuesday for a CUNYAC matchup, falling in straight sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-12) to the City College of New York Beavers (7-1, 3-0 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

"Proud is an understatement. These young ladies worked and rallied for every point. They faced a strong opponent and didn't back down."-said head coach Christy Herring

After falling in the first set, the Cardinals started strong in the second set, leading 4-0 via kills from Emily Cabrera and Andrea Wright. The Beavers responded by taking 14 of the following 16 points. Leading 18-10, CCNY recorded the last seven points to take the set.

Playing from behind, 17-5, in the third set, York dialed up the intensity by keeping the rally alive as a magnificent dig by Nadaysia Nivar that resulted in a Shamonie Miller kill. Overall, the final set provided some momentum to take into their next outing, with the Cardinals taking seven of the last fifteen points.

Across the match, Cabrera's team-high five kills tied her career-best. Additionally, her .182 hitting percentage and five points also were the most for the Cardinals on the night. Along with Cabrera's exploits, Miller had a game-high five digs while Nivar and Cherub Autuar both scooped four. Autuar also dished out five assists.

"[Autar] was injured tonight but was ready to jump right back in the game. Her teammates rallied around her absence and played as a unit."-Herring highlighted

Bianka Catral, Aubrey Jones, and Arianna Rivas paced CCNY. Jones assisted her teammates 13 times to move CCNY's offense as Catral recorded a game-high 11 aces and 16 points. Rivas added eight kills.

The Beavers led the Cardinals in assists (18-9), aces (21-0), and kills (20-9). York's nine kills were a season-high in this young season. Both schools each produced 15 digs, demonstrating the Cardinals improved play as the match grew deeper.

The Cardinals (0-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) have a quick turnaround, returning to their home court on Thursday (Sept. 22) to face the St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) Bears (1-5) at 6:15 p.m.
