NEW YORK --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball returned to the CUNYAC Championship on Wednesday evening for the first time since 2016, taking on the No. 2 seeded Baruch College Bearcats (14-12) in a first-round matchup. Baruch got the best of the seventh-seeded Cardinals on its home court with a 3-0 (25-3, 25-5, 25-6) triumph inside ARC Arena to advance to semifinals on Thursday (Apr. 7) against No. 4 John Jay College (10-11).
The Cardinals were unable to slow Baruch from attacking at a season-high rate of .714 as the Bearcats dominated play. Baruch closed out the opening frame with a 16-0 scoring spree and also finished strong in the second and third sets with 7-0 runs to seal the victory. York jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the final stanza before the Bearcats responded by scoring the next 10 points.
David Heyliger, Jr. paced York with six points on four kills, one ace and a solo block.
Anthony Nazario, Jr. handed out five assists while
Justin Dibra,
Kensley Jean Gilles and
Olawale Kila aided the offensive with one kill each. Defensively, Heyliger Jr., Nazario Jr. and
Jamie Haskell contributed one dig apiece.
Carlos Rodriguez led Baruch to victory with a match-high 12 points, seven aces and five kills. Ryan Oommen captained Baruch's offense with 12 assists and served six of the Bearcats' 27 aces.
In the end, York totaled seven kills and was limited offensively by hitting -.233. Both teams drew even in blocks (1-1) while Baruch outplayed York in points (49-9), attacking percentage (.714 / -.233). kills (21-7), aces (27-1), assists (18-6) and digs (9-3).
