Heyliger Jr. leads @yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball in season-finale against Yeshiva

York College closed out the 2022 season at home with a non-conference matchup against Yeshiva University


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball recorded their third-highest point total of the season Wednesday evening in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-16) loss to conclude the 2022 campaign against the visiting Yeshiva University Maccabees (5-13) inside York College Gymnasium.

Prior to opening serve, head coach Andre M. Titus, Jr. announced his retirement after coaching 23 seasons for the Cardinals.  Titus, Jr. graduated from York in 1984 with dual-bachelor degrees in health education and physical education.

York raced out to an early 2-0 lead before Yeshiva answered with a 5-0 spurt to take control of the set.  Yeshiva created separation with a 5-0 run to increase its lead to 23-15.  In the second frame, both teams traded leads twice as Yeshiva broke a 7-all tie with an 18-8 scoring spree to close out the stanza.  David Heyliger, Jr. served four-straight points to push York's early lead to three (8-5) in the final set.  The Maccabees replied with a 16-2 run to grab hold of a 21-10 match.  York fought back by scoring six of the next eight points before Yeshiva netted two-unanswered points to seal the win.  

The Cardinals produced 25  points on the evening as Heyliger Jr. accounted for 13.5 tallies to pace York.  Heyliger Jr. nailed down 11 kills on 24 swings to go along with two aces, one block assist and seven digs.  Anthony Nazario, Jr. ran the Cardinal offense with 16 assists.  Justin Dibra went for three kills, 1.5 blocks and one ace.  Jamie Haskell and Kensley Jean Gilles registered three points apiece while also serving one ace.   

Alon Jakubowitz led Yeshiva to victory with 11 kills, one ace and a block.  Shmuel Aberman followed with six kills to go along with match-highs of four aces and two blocks.  Benjamin Smillie captained Yeshiva with 20 assists.  

York finished the match with 17 kills and attacked at a rate of -.056.  Both teams drew even in blocks (3-3), while Yeshiva owned the advantage in points (39-25), attacking percentage (.193 / -.056), kills (25-17), aces (11-5), assists (22-17) and digs (17-13).  

The Cardinals conclude the 2022 season with an 0-17 record while graduating three seniors in Mambe Koureissi, Anthony Nazario, Jr. and Shawn Nemoto
