@yorkcardinals Softball celebrates Senior Day against Brooklyn

York College returns to action Friday (Apr. 29) for a CUNYAC doubleheader against Lehman College

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball returned home Wednesday afternoon to celebrate its 2022 senior class with a CUNYAC doubleheader against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (6-18, 4-14 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Fields.  The doubleheader went away from the Cardinals as York fell 18-0 and 14-2 on Senior Day.  Prior to the opening pitch, seniors Taylor Bellmon (2022), Mary Cuevas (2019, 2022),  Kiara Gonzalez (2022) and Melissa Noble (2018-2019, 2022) were recognized for their dedication to York Athletics with the annual Senior Day Ceremony.

Game 1: Brooklyn 18, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • Brooklyn put together a 10-run first inning on Cuevas (L, 0-9; 5 IP, 14 H, 10 ER, 13 BB, SO) to grab control early with six hits, six walks and one costly error.
  • Nayelly Rojas (2-of-2, SB) slugged a one-out single in the opening frame to connect on York's first hit of the game, and then proceeded to steal second base.
  •  York produced a pair of singles in the fourth inning as Rojas legged out an infield single to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Andrea Wright (1-for-2) dropped a single into shallow right center before Danielle Guzzardi (W, 5-18; 5 IP, 3 H, 9 SO) bounced back to fan Bellmon to escape out of the jam.
  • Brooklyn led the game in hits (14-3), walks (13-0) and stolen bases (3-1).  The Bulldogs' pitching recorded nine strikeouts compared to York's three. Defensively, York committed four errors as Brooklyn played a flawless game in the field.  Brooklyn left nine runners on base while York stranded three.
Game 2: Brooklyn 14, York 2 (5 Inn.)
  • Brooklyn jumped ahead with a trio of first-inning runs off Cuevas (L, 0-10; 5 IP, 6 H, 14 R, 7 ER, 11 BB, 3 SO) on two singles and one walk to break the scoring ice.
  • York put the pressure on Guzzardi (W, 6-18; 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 11 SO) in the opening set by placing its first three batters on base as Shamonie Miller (1-for-2, 2 R) and Gonzalez knocked singles.
  • After back-to-back strikeouts, Bellmon (0-for-1, RBI, BB) worked a bases loaded walk to push across Miller for York's initial run, ending a three-game scoring drought.
  • Brooklyn answered with three runs in the second and six more in the third to take a commanding 12-1 lead.
  • In the fifth, Rojas poked a single through the  right side, as a throwing error scored Miller from first to settle the scoring.
  • Brooklyn outplayed York in hits (6-3), walks (11-1, and stolen bases (4-0).
  • The Bulldogs' pitching controlled the game with 11 strikeouts to York's three.  Brooklyn stood tall on defense with only one error, while York committed five costly miscues. The Bulldogs left seven runners on base as York stranded four.
