@yorkcardinals Softball takes early lead on Lehman

York College travels Sunday (May 1) for a CUNYAC doubleheader against Baruch College

BRONX --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened a four-game road trip Friday afternoon, falling 14-2 and 17-0 in CUNYAC play against the Lehman College Lightning (10-12, 8-10 CUNYAC) from South Field.

Game 1: Lehman 14, York 2 (5 Inn.)
  • The Cardinals broke the scoring ice first in the opening frame as Shamonie Miller reached base after getting hit by the pitch to lead off the game.  Miller then stole second and advanced to third on a Nayelly Rojas single before crossing home plate on a fielder's choice.
  • Lehman responded swiftly with 12 runs in the home half of the first, capitalizing on York's trio of untimely errors while producing five hits, six walks and a pair of hit batters on Mary Cuevas (L, 0-11; 4 IP, 7 H, ER, 9 BB, 4 SO).
  •  In the fifth, MIller slapped a single to push Alma Romero into scoring position.  After Sky Mercado's (W, 5-7; 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 SO) wild pitch advanced the runners, Rojas rolled a ground out to drive home Romero to close out the scoring.
  • The Lightning outplayed York in hits (7-2), extra-base hits (4-0), stolen bases (4-2) and walks drawn (9-1) as York left five runners on base compared to Lehman's seven.  Defensively, York committed six errors while Lehman had two.
Game 2: Lehman 17, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • Miller once again was hit by the pitch as the game's initial batter.  She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch prior to being stranded.
  • Lehman put the game out of reach with nine runs in the opening frame on Kiara Gonzalez (W, 0-3; 11 H, 13 ER, 9 BB).
  • In York's second, Taylor Bellmon reached base for the third-straight game with a one-out single and stole second.
  • The Lightning kept the scoring going with two runs in the second and third frames before piling on four more in the fourth.
  • York placed its final runner on the base path in the third when Miller was plunked and stole second.
  • Jessica Perez (W, 2-1; 5 IP, H, 2 SO) closed out Lehman's one-hitter by retiring seven-straight batters.
  • Lehman knocked 11 hits and worked nine walks off York's pitching while stranding one runner on base as the Cardinals abandoned two.  York also committed four costly errors.
