@yorkcardinals Softball threatens late in CUNYAC-opening series against John Jay

York College remains at home Wednesday (Apr. 6) to host Yeshiva University for a non-conference doubleheader


BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened CUNYAC play Friday afternoon at home with 26-0 and 17-0 setbacks against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (4-5, 2-0 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Fields.

Game 1: John Jay 26, York 0 (5 inn.)
  • John Jay jumped ahead in the first inning, making 11 trips across home plate off pitcher Rosenery Chicaiza (L, 0-3; 5 IP, 16 ER, 7 BB, 2 K) and never looked back. 
  • Rylea Sandel (3-for-4, 3 HR, 10 RBI) ignited the Bloodhounds by launching two of her three home runs in the opening frame to drive in six runs. 
  • Mary Cuevas (1-for-2) stroked a two-out double in the second inning off John Jay pitcher America Rivera (W, 1-3; 5 IP, H, BB, 5 K) to break York into the hit column. 
  • In the fifth inning, Kiara Gonzalez led off with a walk before Rivera retired three-straight Cardinals to seal the victory.  
Game 2: John Jay 17, York 0 (5 inn.)
  • The Bloodhounds dominated play in the opening inning with three doubles during a stretch of seven-straight hits off Chicaiza (L, 0-4; 5 IP, 19 H, 13 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) as part of an eight-run frame.
  • Cuevas (1-for-2) hit safely for the third-straight game with a timely two-out single in the fourth. 
  • After Cuevas stole second, Chicaiza reached on an error before Melissa Noble drew a walk. 
  • John Jay's Madison Gil (W, 1-0; 5 IP, H, 3 BB, 6 K) settled down to escape out of the jam as Andrea Wright lifted a fly out to left field to strand three Cardinals. 
  • York placed a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning with Shamonie Miller working the count to garner a free pass with two outs before advancing to second on a wild pitch.
