@yorkcardinals Softball takes early lead on Valley Forge

York College opens CUNYAC play Wednesday (Mar. 30) at Lehman College

PHOENIXVILLE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball continued their six-game road trip Saturday afternoon with 13-0 and 17-5 non-conference road setbacks to the University of Valley Forge Patriots (4-4) from UVF Field.

Game 1: Valley Forge 13, York 0 (5 Inn.)
The Cardinals struggled offensively and were limited to just one base runner as Nayelly Rojas reached on a two-out error by catcher Keegan Thompson in the fifth inning.

Valley Forge scored seven runs off Rosenery Chicaiza (L, 0-1; 4 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 6 BB, 2 K) in the opening frame as a fielding error by left fielder Emily Cabrera allowed Laura Medio (1-for-2,  2 BB, 2 R, RBI) to score the game-winning run to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Chicaiza bounced back to limit Valley Forge to four batters in the second and fourth innings.  The Patriots settled the 13-0 final with six runs in the third frame.

Medio tossed five innings of no-hit ball while striking out 13 Cardinals to pick up the win.  The Patriots finished with the advantage in hits (9-0), walks (6-0) and stolen bases (1-0).  Defensively, York made five errors and Valley Forge committed one.  Valley Forge also stranded six runners as York left one on base.

Game 2: Valley Forge 17, York 5 (5 Inn.)
UVF hurler Ashlynn Kunes (W, 1-0; 4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)  lost control and hit Cabrera (0-for-1, 2 R, SB) with the pitch to place the opening batter on base.  Cabrera then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Shamonie Miller (1-for-2, BB, R, SB).  Bryanna Lora Martinez (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI, R,) broke the scoring ice with a single to drive home Cabrera for York's 1-0 lead.  With the bases loaded, Kunes hit Mary Cuevas (2-for-2, RBI) and Chicaiza (L, 0-1; 4 IP, 9 H, 13 ER, 10 BB, K) to plate home two Cardinals to make it a 3-0 game.

Valley Forge answered in the home half of the first inning with a RBI triple by Jaeleen Mendoza (1-for-2, 2 BB, RBI 2 R) to put the Patriots on the board.  Kunes (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI, R) followed with a RBI single and scored three batters later on a fielder's choice to knot the game at 3-all.  Ciara Anthony (1-for-3, BB, 3 RBI, 2 R) then stroked a two-run single to give Valley Forge a 5-3 lead.

Chicaiza regrouped in the second by retiring three of her four batters faced before the Patriots put the game away with a six-run third inning to stretch the lead to eight (11-3).

York answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to trim the Patriot lead to six.  With the bases loaded, Lora Martinez grounded out to second base to push Alma Romero home.  Cabrera then scored York's final run on a passed ball.  Valley Forge made the most of three costly Cardinal errors that contributed to six runs during the fourth inning to settle the 17-5 final.

Valley Forge outplayed York offensively in hits (9-5), stolen bases (5-2) and walks (10-1).  The Cardinals stranded six runners on base, compared to the Patriots' eight.  Defensively, York committed five errors as Valley Forge recorded one.
