@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball clash with CCNY

York College returns home Tuesday (Mar. 15) for a CUNYAC bout against John Jay College on Alumni Appreciation Night


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball opened their CUNYAC road schedule Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-19, 25-16) defeat against the City College of New York Beavers (6-4, 2-3 CUNYAC) inside Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The Cardinals opened by scoring the first point of the contest, but were unable to keep pace as the Beavers used a 6-0 run to pull away with the first set point.  In the second set, York scored five out of six points during a stretch that knotted the game at 8-all.  York continued to go toe-to-toe with CCNY, tallying five of seven points to pull within one (19-18) before the Beavers closed out the set with a 6-1 spurt.  The Cardinals started the third stanza strong, taking a pair of early leads during a set that saw them limit their attacking errors.  CCNY took control of the match with a 7-0 scoring spree to take a commanding 17-7 lead.  York answered with a 9-6 run to make it a 23-16 game prior to CCNY closing out with the final points to secure the sweep.    

After hitting .045 in the final set, the Cardinals finished the contest attacking at a rate of -.090 with 15 kills on 67 attempts, including 21 attacking errors.  The Beavers outmatched York in points (46-18), kills (30-15), attacking percentage (.230 to -.090), aces (15-2), assists (25-13) and digs (27-21). Both teams drew even in blocks (1-1). 

David Heyliger, Jr. anchored York with a team-high nine points, eight kills and one ace.  His statline included a match-high seven digs and a season-best 31 swings.  Mambe Koureissi followed with six points, four kills, one ace and one solo block.  Anthony Nazario, Jr. distributed 13 assists to captain the Cardinal offense.  Jamie Haskell scooped six digs while Kensley Jean Gilles registered five.     

Xhulio Myftari led CCNY to victory with a match-high 12 kills on 26 attempts.  Rahul Sharma served four aces as Jeffery Celis handed out a match-high 24 assists in the winning effort.
