@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball opens CUNYAC play against Lehman

York College travels Saturday (Mar. 12) for a CUNYAC matchup against City College of New York


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College men's volleyball returned to the court Thursday evening to open CUNYAC play with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 19-25, 25-6) setback against the Lehman College Lightning (5-9, 1-4 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

Both teams battled during an opening set that featured two lead changes and five ties.  Trailing 8-6, Lehman closed out the set with a 19-9 spurt to set the tone.  After falling in the second stanza, York was the better team in the third.  The Cardinals hit .264 on nine kills and 19 attempts to win by six as Alex Winter served four-straight points during a key 5-0 run.  York was unable to carry the momentum to the fourth set as Lehman dominated play to hold a +19 scoring edge to secure the win.

The Cardinals finished the match with a season-high 23 kills, four solo blocks and 27 digs while matching a season-best effort of five aces and 19 assists.  York outplayed the Lightning in kills (23-18), blocks (4-2), assists (19-17) and digs (27-25).  In the end, both teams drew even in attacking percentage (.029) as Lehman finished with the advantage in points (35-32) and aces (15-5).

Leading the way for York was Mambe Koureissi, who nailed down a season-high seven kills and served two aces to go along with three solo blocks to register a match-high 12 points.  David Heyliger, Jr. followed with 11 points, totaling a match-leading nine kills on 26 swings, and added nine digs (match-high), one ace and one solo block to his statline.  Anthony Nazario, Jr. dished out a career-high 17 assists as Olawale Kila produced a personal-best six points and five kills.   

Andrew Figueroa led all servers with six aces to pace Lehman to victory.  Emmanuel Oladuso registered six kills while Christian Agudo captainined Lehman's offense with nine assists.
