www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball swept the season series from the Lehman College Lightning (3-15, 2-9 CUNYAC) Sunday afternoon with a convincing 55-45 CUNYAC road win inside APEX Arena. The series win against Lehman is the Cardinals' third in as many seasons.
How it Happened
- The Cardinals played ahead for the entire game as a quick start by York proved to be the difference by outscoring Lehman by eight (13-5) in the opening quarter.
- Both teams struggled offensively in the early going with Kristina Sierra's 3-pointer 3:34 in broke the scoring ice for a 3-0 York lead.
- York pushed its lead to 13 (24-11) with 2:49 left in the second period during an 8-2 spurt that featured four points apiece from Alicia Gumbs and Ellma Hodzic.
- Lehman then scored six of the game's next seven points to pull within eight (25-17) before trailing by nine (27-18) at intermission.
- The Lightning went on a 10-1 scoring spree to open the second-half to knot the game at 28-all with 6:20 left.
- York slowed down in the stanza, shooting just 3-of-11 from the field as Lehman held a 15-8 scoring advantage to trim the deficit to 35-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Cardinals outplayed Lehman over the final 10 minutes, owning a 20-12 scoring advantage to secure the 10-point win.
- Hodzic set the tone in the fourth with a triple 24 seconds in followed by Mac-Dege Dessources' five-straight points that made it a 43-33 game to open with an 8-0 surge.
- Both teams played even for the final 6:26 as York extended its lead to 11 points (49-38) with 3:10 showing on the clock.
- Lehman scored four out of five points during a stretch to get as close as seven (49-42) with 2:01 left, but were unable to push past York.
Inside the Box Score
Dessources produced 19 points (8-of-17 FG),15 rebounds (seven offensive) and two blocks to post her 10th double-double of the season (39th career). Hodzic finished with 17 points (6-of-15 FG, 3-of-4 FG), eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Gumbs went for nine points (3-of-5 FG, 3-of-4 FT), six rebounds, four steals and four assists while Sierra chipped in nine points (3-of-8 3FG) and six rebounds.
Mojisola Shokeye's 17 points paced Lehman. Kahdija Jabbi followed with 10 points while Brianna Barnes went for eight points and three steals.
In the end, York connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from 3-point land and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free-throw line as Lehman shot 25.9 percent (15-of-58) from the floor, 30 percent (3-of-10) from outside the arc and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the charity stripe. The Cardinals outrebounded Lehman by 13 (46-33), converting 12 offensive boards into just seven points. York also held the advantage in assists (12-8), blocks (4-0) and points in the paint (26-16) while Lehman edged the Cardinals in steals (11-4), bench points (10-0) and scored 17 points off 23 Cardinal turnovers.
