www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball outscored the Western Connecticut State Wolves (6-1) by eight in the second half but were unable to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit, falling 59-53 in a non-conference matchup Friday evening inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- WestConn raced out to a 9-0 advantage in the opening 3:07.
- The team's traded baskets the rest of the first quarter, with Rosaleen Regan's three with two seconds remaining putting the Wolves up 20-10.
- Ashley Riley's three-point play at 6:18 in the second stanza capped off a 12-1 run for WestConn, extending its lead to 21 (32-11).
- York closed the half on a 9-2 spurt, with Imani Gibson's free-throw with 29 seconds left pulled the Cardinals within 14 (34-20).
- The Cardinals cut the deficit to 11 (38-27) after Ellma Hodzic cashed in a trey at the 4:33 mark in the third.
- Jasmine Caldwell converted a layup with 43 seconds remaining in the third to make the score 46-35 in favor of the Wolves.
- WestConn's lead fluctuated from seven to 11 points for most of the last quarter.
- Hodzic's triple with 41 seconds left cut York's deficit to six (54-48).
- The Cardinals got as close as three (56-53) when Madison Plaza canned two free-throws with 21 seconds remaining.
- Nicole Vivian's freebie with 14 seconds left closed out the scoring with the Wolves winning 59-53.
- Overall, York outscored WestConn 33-25 in the second half.
Speaking about their comeback attempt, head coach Kimani Jackson said, "The team started to show more defensive energy and [they] executed better offensively in the second half."

Mac-Dege Dessources totaled game-highs of 16 points (7-of-18 FG), 16 rebounds (seven offensive), four blocks and four steals to produce her seventh double-double of the season (48th career). Hodzic dropped 15 points (4-of-7 3FG) and two steals as
Alicia Gumbs registered 11 points and a team-best four assists.
Kristina Sierra nabbed three steals.
Nicole Peralta, Gabrielle Franks and Regan all scored 10 points to pace the Wolves to victory. Kately Fanning and Rilley followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Vivian dished our four assists while Caldwell grabbed a team-high seven boards.
York finished the game shooting 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from 3-point range and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free-throw line. WestConn hit on 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the floor, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 63.2 percent from the charity stripe.
The Wolves scored 21 points off 25 Cardinal turnovers, compared to York's 13 points off 21 WestConn turnovers. York maintained a slim advantage in second chance points (14-12) and fast break points (12-10), while the Wolves won the points in the paint battle (26-20). WestConn outrebounded York by one (41-40) in addition to grabbing 18 offensive boards. The Wolves also edged York in assists, 17-8.
