@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball tips off three-game homestand against NYU

York College faces Western Connecticut State on Friday (Dec. 9) in a home non-conference matchup

York College men's basketball fell at home Wednesday night by the final count of 98-62 to the New York University Violets (8-0) in a non-conference affair inside York College Gymnasium.  

"Our guys got a ton of experience playing against such a talented team in NYU. What stood out is that our guys have proven that no matter how tough it gets they will continue to display effort."-said head coach  Jamel Gist.

How it Happened
  • York took an early 5-3 lead at 18:04.
  • NYU responded with a 9-0 run over the next 1:56.
  • The Cardinals went on their own 8-0 burst to go up 13-12 with 15:04 remaining. 
  • NYU responded with an 18-0 spurt to build an 18-point cushion (30-13).
  • Terrell Fullerton scored five points to key York's 8-0 run that cut the deficit to nine (30-21).
  • NYU went on a 16-1 scoring spree to extend its advantage to 24 (46-22).
  • Spencer Freedmam's layup with two seconds showing on the clock closed out NYU's scoring to make it a 58-34 game at the break.
  • York got as close as 15 (60-45) in the second half as Olawale Kila's bucket with 16:27 remaining capped off a 11-2 surge.
  • Fredman's layup at 10:36 pushed NYU's lead to 25 (77-52).
  • Nikola Lipovic's triple at the 4:59 mark gave the Violets' a 90-59 edge. 

Inside the Box Score
Fullerton led York in scoring for the ninth-consecutive game, with an efficient 15 points (6-of-10 FG. 3-of-5 3FG) to go along with three assists and one steal during 18 first-half minutes. Devine Chisholm added 14 points (3-of-7 3PT), hauled in seven boards, and added a team-best five assists. Kila recorded his second double-double of the campaign, dropping 10 points, crashing the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Matthew Trepeta was the team's fourth double-digit scorer, chipping in with 10 points (3-of-6 FG). Matthew Smiley swatted a pair of shots.   

Freedman and Cinque Stephens sparked NYU. Stephens scored a game-high 27 points (9-of-13 FG, 8-of-10 3FG) in just 19 minutes off the bench. Freedman totaled 17 points (6-of-11 FG, 5-of-8 3FG) and dished out a game-best eight dimes. Zay Freeney (14), Holt Bashinsky (14), Lipovic (12), and Quinn Clark (10) all scored in double-figures. 

NYU made 44.3 percent of its field goals (35-of-79) and 44 percent of its three-pointers (22-of-50). York shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field and 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from downtown.

Additionally, the Violets outrebounded the Cardinals (48-38) and outplayed them in assists (30-13), steals (12-3), points off turnovers (24-12), second-chance points (21-8), and fast break points (23-10). Having a presence inside, York had more paint points (28-26).
