@yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer close out CUNYAC campaign with Senior Day showdown against CCNY

York College returns to the pitch next Saturday (Oct. 29) against Pratt Institute

BROOKLYN -- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer closed out their CUNYAC schedule Saturday afternoon, allowing a decisive goal in the 79th minute to fall 3-2 to the City College of New York Beavers (3-7-1, 3-4-0 CUNYAC) from Kingsborough Community College Field.  Prior to kickoff, seniors Doston Abdigaffarov (2018-19, 21-22), Djelili Okoro (2021-22) and Ricardo Dorcil (2022) were recognized with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to York College Athletics.

CCNY had the advantage early on, as Erik Jimenez turned in a pass from Hazim Naji in the seventh minute. Jimenez got his brace at 25:37, firing home from a corner. Taking control during Senior Day, Abdigaffarov scored in the 37th minute off a Stanley Sanchez freekick, taking advantage of a penalty box scrum. Kervin Mondesir leveled the score for the Cardinals at 40:37, getting on the end of a long ball from Abdigaffarov, rounded the keeper and placed the ball in an empty net. Zero goal contributions this season before this afternoon, Abdigaffarov generated two in under four minutes.

With both teams failing to break the deadlock in the second frame, Beavers' forward Peter Gjini latched onto an Antony Sumba corner to snatch the lead back. Gjini's goal was his first of the campaign, and it ended up being the match-winning effort in the 79th minute.

A relatively even statistical comparison shots-wise in the first half (CCNY: 8-5), the Beavers outshot York in the second half, 7-1. CCNY also controlled the corner advantage (10-1), as two of their goals came via this situation.

The Cardinals (2-8-0) are scheduled to take the field next against the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (1-11-2) on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 10 a.m. from Aviator Field.
