@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball clashes with CUNYAC foe John Jay

York College hosts Lehman College on Tuesday (Oct. 18) for a CUNYAC encounter

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball dropped a conference match to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (10-8, 4-1 CUNYAC) in straight sets (25-6, 25-15, 25-16) from The Doghouse.

"With such a young team, we have been working diligently at practice to improve on all aspects of the game. We watched them execute much of what we have been focusing on this past week in practice."-said head coach Christy Herring

With York in striking distance, showing 10-5 on the scoreboard, John Jay turned on the afterburners, claiming 15 of the final sixteen first-set points. The Bloodhounds continued their momentum into the second frame, taking a quick 9-3 lead. Similar to previous matches, the Cardinals stayed alive in the set, winning half of the following twenty-two points. With a 20-14 scoreline, the Bloodhounds' three kills helped John Jay pull away from York. Getting off to slow starts in the previous two stanzas, the Cardinals kept it close in the third set, trailing only 10-9 courtesy of three aces by Ellma Hodzic. Demonstrating their talent, the Bloodhounds won 10 of the next 11 points, essentially sealing the match.

Ellma Hodzic, Shamonie Miller, and Cherub Autar mainly contributed to York's attacking gameplay. Hodzic shined, finishing with team-highs in points (9), kills (5), aces (4), digs (10), and hitting percentage (.211). Hodzic's nine points, four aces, and stout hitting accuracy are all career highs. Nearly matching Hodzic in digs, Miller recorded nine. Additionally, she added the team's only other kill. Quarterbacking the team, Autar tallied five assists. Libero Naomi Heras Picon's efforts should not be forgotten, as she totaled five digs and only made three reception errors out of thirteen attempts. Her 77% success rate paced the team.

Faith Harer and Paige Sadowitz were John Jay's heavy hitters as they each recorded a game-best 11 points. Harer provided six kills and five aces, while Sadowitz finished with five kills and six aces. Meghan Smith set the tempo for the Bloodhounds' attack, leading the match with 15 assists.

John Jay held advantages in points (47-12), kills (27-6), aces (20-6), and assists (27-6). The Bloodhounds only had six more digs (35-29), indicating that York turned potential winners from John Jay into opportunities for their own kills.

When asked about the slight difference in kills, coach Herring responded:

"I am happy and proud to see [thay] defensively we were almost equal against them."

The Cardinals (0-14, 0-5 CUNYAC) meet the Lehman College Lightning (4-10, 1-4 CUNYAC) on Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m for a CUNYAC matchup inside York College Gymnasium.
