FLUSHING, NY--- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer got out to a fast start Wednesday afternoon to outlast the Lehman College Lightning (1-6-0, 0-2-0 CUNYAC) with a 4-3 CUNYAC victory from College Point Field.
The Cardinals jumped ahead early with a goal by
Alisha Adams at the 8:57 mark to give York its first lead of the season. Moments later,
Zaria Neptune doubled York's advantage by blasting a penalty kick past Lehman goalie Josefina Flores (0-3-0) for the two-goal cushion in the 17th minute. Lehman's Laura Ramos sliced the deficit in half near halftime as she latched onto a long ball into the box and lashed it home past Cardinal goalie
Katherine Perez (1-3-0).
The intensity of both teams increased in the second stanza. Ramatoulaye Diallo coolly finished past Perez after a through ball by Ramos. Not even two minutes later, York's
Emelin Cajamarca turned and placed one far post with her left peg off the post. Holding onto a one-goal advantage, in the 79th minute,
Taylor Bellmon received the ball on the left side of the halfway line and dribbled past two Lightning defenders before firing it home for her fourth-career game-winning goal. Certainly York's best goal of the campaign. The Cardinals' two-goal lead did not last long, as 27 seconds later, Diallo poked one home to halve the deficit. Attempting to breach the Cardinals' goal for the final ten minutes, they could find the finishing touch, as York's defense held firm.
"[The players] came up big at the end when Lehman increased its offensive pressure, looking for the equalizer."-said head coach Winston Willabus
Speaking about Bellmon, coach Willabus had this to say;
"Taylor Bellmon is a game changer. She's definitely one of the purset athletes I've had the pleasure of coaching. York has been very lucky to have her don our uniform. Her goal was magnificent not because of any technical prowess, but just her pure determination to beat the opponent and try to seal the match."
In terms of chance creation, the Lightning held a slight edge. Lehman had more shots (21-13), shots on target (14-8), and corners (6-4). Keeping the ball out of the net, York had more saves (11-4) as Perez made seven stops while
Joanne Chavez turned away four shots.
The Cardinals (1-3-0, 1-1-0 CUNYAC) oppose the City College of New York Beavers (6-1-1, 2-0-0 CUNYAC) on Saturday (Oct. 15) at 4:30 p.m for a CUNYAC showdown at Aviator Field.
