Gutierrez’s 14 saves lead @yorkcardinals women’s soccer in season opener at Pratt

York College returns to the pitch Wednesday (Sept. 29) for its home opener against Mitchell College

BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer returned to play Sunday for the first time since the 2019 campaign with a season-opening matchup versus the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (3-2-1).  The Cardinals fell behind early and were unable to recover in Pratt's 9-0 non-conference decision from Aviator Field in Brooklyn.

Pratt broke the scoring ice 38 seconds in with a score by Annie Brown to finish a feed from Riley Oram to give the Cannoneers a 1-0 lead.  York regrouped over the next couple of minutes to hold Pratt off the board until Oram doubled the Cannoneer advantage on York goalie Stephanie Guitterez (0-1-0) at the 10:47 mark.

York broke down the Pratt defense in the 14th minute to break into the shot column with an attempt by Emilin Cajamarca that landed on target.  Following goals in the 24th and 36th minutes, Pratt took a 4-0 lead into intermission.

During the second half, Cajamarca put up two shots while Taylor Bellmon and Melanie Guerrero each took one on Pratt goalie Casey O'Connor (3-2-1).  York also pressured Pratt during the final 45 minutes that saw the Cardinals own a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.  Playing in her first contest since the 2018 season, Gutierrez registered nine first-half stops and finished with 14 saves while facing 50 shots.  Gutierrez's 14 saves were the most since setting her career-best performance of 19 versus CCNY on October 21, 2017.

Three-goal efforts by Oram and Siena Sujitno led the charge for Pratt as the Cannoneers finished with the advantage in shots (50-5), shots on goal (23-3) and corner kicks (6-4).  O'Connor turned away three shots to preserve the shutout.

The Cardinals (0-1-0) are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 29) for their home opener against the Mitchell College Mariners (2-5-1) at 3 p.m. from College Point Field in Flushing, New York.  At present time, spectators are not permitted at College Point Field.  Visit yorkathletics.com/fans to view the Fall Spectator Policy.
