FLUSHING, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer opened their home slate with a hard fought 2-2 draw at the end of 110 minutes Wednesday afternoon during a non-conference battle against the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles (2-1-1) from College Point Field in Flushing.
The opening half presented plenty of scoring opportunities, but it wasn't until the 35th minute when
Kervin Mondesir broke a scoreless tie off a feed from
Antonio Josephs to put York up, 1-0. York then doubled its advantage with a quick score 63 seconds later when
Emmanuel Franco assisted on a
Wesly Antunez strike that zipped past Eagle goalie Justin Couto (2-1-1) to send the Cardinals into the break ahead by two.
Saint Elizabeth clawed its way back in with a goal by Ethan Mosquera in the 55th minute to slice the deficit in half. Alejandro Lopez scored the equalizer at the 58:16 mark to settle the scoring as a 2-2 match moved into overtime. Both teams were unable to convert during the double overtime periods despite a combined 12 attempts.
Cardinal netminder
Ahmed Elgendy (0-1-1) faced 10 shots in overtime and turned away a career-high 15 shots to hold off the Eagles. The 15 stops were the most for the Cardinals since the 2018 season, when Johan Bermeo registered 15 against William Paterson University (Sept. 12).
Marvin Mondesir attempted a career-high nine shots as York took a season-best 17 shots.
Couto made four saves in goal for Saint Elizabeth. Looking inside the numbers, Saint Elizabeth outplayed York in shots (37-17), shots on goal (17-6) and corner kicks (9-4).
The Cardinals (0-1-1) are back in action Saturday for a non-conference showdown with the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (2-0-1) from the Athletic Field at Marillac in Riverdale, New York.
