@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball steer past Medgar Evers for CUNYAC-opening win

York College returns to the hardwood on December 7 for a non-conference matchup at New York University


FARMINGDALE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball opened up CUNYAC play Friday evening with a 72-63 home win against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (2-6, 0-1 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals got off to a slow start, misfiring on six shots to trail 7-1 in the opening minutes. 
  • York then dialed it up with a 12-0 run as Quran Dublin and Devine Chisholm each scored five points to put the Cardinals in front, 13-7. 
  • Both teams traded leads until York erased a three-point deficit with a 12-0 spurt to go up by nine with 2:13 remaining in the half.  
  • Leading 37-28 at the break, the Cardinals played with the lead for the final 23:17 to secure the program's first CUNYAC-opening triumph since 2014-15, when they defeated Medgar Evers, 85-80. 
  • Medgar Evers raced out of the second-half gates to outscore York, 17-9, to pull within one (46-45) with 11:58 showing on the clock. 
  • York replied with a 17-9 run of its own to build a nine-point cushion (65-56) with 2:19 left. 
  • Medgar Evers got as close as six (68-62) in crunch time before a dunk by Guillermo Hernandez settled the 72-63 final.  

Inside the Box Score
Dublin finished with 19 points , eight assists, six rebounds and three steals to lead York in scoring for the fifth time this season.  Chisholm registered 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while Mert Zor netted a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds (tied career-high) off the bench.  Donald Hartley Jr. grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds as Hernandez pulled down eight boards and swatted two shots.  Roki Mendoza Familia tallied nine rebounds and nabbed three steals.  Olawale Kila's defensive presence resulted in 12 rebounds, two blocks and one steal.  

Dante Simmons produced 16 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks to pace Medgar Evers.  Mousa Sinera added 14 points, 19 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.  

York finished the game hitting 37.3 percent from the field (25-of-67), 25.9 percent from three-point territory (7-of-27) and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-24) as Medgar Evers shot just 28.1 percent from the floor (25-of-89), 25.9 percent from long distance (7-of-27) and 26.1 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-24).  The Cardinals won the boards battle, 69-55, while the Cougars scored 16 second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.  York owned the edge in assists (19-14) and bench scoring (14-4) as Medgar Evers outplayed the Cardinals in steals (14-8), blocks (6-5) and points in the paint (34-24).  Medgar Evers also converted 31 Cardinal turnovers into 25 points.
