@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball battles Old Westbury

The Cardinals return to the court on December 29 for a non-conference matchup against Yeshiva University inside York College Gymnasium


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returned home Tuesday evening with a 65-45 non-conference setback to the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (2-3) inside York College Gymnasium. 

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals played ahead for most of the first quarter, erasing an early two-point deficit with an 11-1 run to lead 13-5 with 4:11 left. 
  • Kristina Sierra sank back-to-back triples during that stretch to close out the spurt. 
  • Old Westbury began to chip away to trail 17-12 at the end of the first period. 
  • Following a Madison Plaza jumper that put York up by three (19-16) at the 7:23 mark, Old Westbury put together a 16-2 run to lead by 11. 
  • York was limited to 3-of-12 shooting with five turnovers as Old Westbury made its push.
  • Trailing 35-24 at intermission, Sierra connected on a three-pointer to pull the Cardinals as close as 13 (40-27) with 7:37 showing on the third-quarter clock. 
  • The Panthers used an 8-0 run to go up by 22 (54-32) in the third before extending their advantage to a game-high 25 points (59-34) with 6:31 remaining in the fourth period. 
  • York closed out the game strong with an 11-6 spurt over the final 5:58.
Inside the Box Score
Ellma Hodzic scored seven of her team-leading 19 points (season-high) during the fourth quarter to pace York.  Hodzic also added 12 points, three blocks and two steals to her statline to finish with her second-career double-double.   Sierra registered nine points and seven rebounds while Alicia Gumbs tallied nine points, five assists and three steals.  Aminata Sagna grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out four assists as Plaza swatted a career-high three shots. 

Ja'Nya Flash produced game-highs of 23 points (11-of-21 FG) and 27 rebounds to lead Old Westbury to victory.  Samirah Akinwunmi (18 points), Cherish Francis (12 points) and Ashley Cattle (12 points) all scored in double-digits.

York finished the game hitting 29.2 percent from the field (19-of-65), 22.7 percent from three-point territory (5-of-22) and 28.5 from the charity stripe (2-of-7). Old Westbury in turn shot 31.4 percent from the field (28-of-89), 13 percent from three-point land (3-of-23) and 66 percent from the free-throw line (6-of-9).  York owned the edge in blocks (6-3) while Old Westbury outplayed the Cardinals in rebounds (64-47), second-chance points (18-2), points in the paint (46-20) assists (15-11) and steals (12-6).
