FARMINGDALE, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball jumped out to a double-digit lead on the road Friday evening, but were unable to keep pace with the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (3-1), falling 88-85 in non-conference action from Walter A. Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, New York.
How it Happened
- Guillermo Hernandez erupted for 10 points as the Cardinals went on a 15-3 scoring spree to build a 23-10 lead with 12:46 showing on the first-half clock.
- Old Westbury answered by erasing a 13-point deficit during a stretch of 5:23 with a 22-7 spurt to jump ahead, 34-32.
- In an opening stanza that featured eight lead changes and five ties, York outscored Old Westbury by three (13-10) in the final 5:44 as Quran Dublin knocked down a pair of three-pointers to send the Cardinals into the break up by one (45-44).
- After shooting 44.7 percent from the field in the first-half, York cooled off over the next 20 minutes to land 39 percent while Old Westbury fired away at 53.3 percent.
- Old Westbury opened the second-half scoring 26 seconds in with a triple by Jonathan Jamieson to give the Panthers a 47-45 advantage, a lead they would hold for the remaining 19:34.
- Following a Dublin layup to pull York within one (52-51), the Panthers drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to grow their lead to seven (58-51) with 15:17 left.
- York continued to chip away to stay within striking distance, but Old Westbury proved to be too much during a second-half that saw the Panthers hold a four-point scoring advantage.
- Old Westbury stretched its lead back to seven (86-79) with 1:06 remaining before Dublin scored four of York's final six points to settle the scoring.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals scored four in double-figures led by Dublin's game-high 30 points (10-of-20 FG, 5-of-10 3FG, 5-of-5 FT). Dublin added five rebounds and five assists to his statline in 40 minutes of action.
Devine Chisholm followed with 15 points while
Mert Zor registered a career-high 10 points, seven rebounds and one block off the bench. Hernandez posted his second double-double of the season, totaling 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Roki Mendoza Familia grabbed nine rebounds and
Olawale Kila ripped down eight to go along with one block and one steal.
Donald Hartley Jr. nabbed a team-high two steals.
Jamieson poured in 28 points (5-of-9 3FG) and swept away three steals while Zachary Cummings went for 26 points (6-of-12 FG), seven assists and seven rebounds to lead Old Westbury to victory.
York did most of their damage down low, outscoring Old Westbury 50-28 in the paint. The Cardinals won the boards battle, 49-41, scoring 19 second-chance points while holding a 19-12 edge in offensive rebounds. York finished the game shooting 41.8 percent from the field (33-of-79), 33.3 percent from three-point territory (8-of-24) and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line (11-of-13) while Old Westbury connected on 47.1 percent from the floor (32-of-68), 41.4 percent from long range (12-of-29) and 52.2 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-23). Old Westbury converted 13 Cardinal turnovers into 16 points and outplayed York in steals (5-4) and assists (11-10).
