BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer tied a season-high with three goals on Monday afternoon to power past the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-13-0) with a 3-1 non-conference win from Kingsborough Community College Field in Brooklyn. The victory helped York split the season series after Medgar Evers pulled out a 4-3 CUNYAC win on October 16.
Both teams played even in the opening minutes until York broke the scoring ice in the 30th minute as
Abdul Bassa finished a one-touch feed in the box from
Antonio Josephs for a 1-0 lead on Cougar netminder Carl-Henry Obeissant (1-9-0). The Cardinals outshot Medgar Evers by seven shots (11-4) in the first half, led by Bassa's four attempts.
In the 59th minute,
Nilson Henriquez connected with
Kervin Mondesir on a long ball to double York's advantage for the game-winning goal (second of the season). Mondesir's tally is his team-leading 10th goal of the season. After Medgar Evers sliced its deficit in half in the 70th minute on a goal by Salim Soumare, York settled the scoring as Mondesir set
Kirk Gardner up for the insurance goal with nine seconds remaining.
Ahmed Elgendy (2-7-1) made two saves to preserve York's triumph. Obeissant turned away five shots in defeat for the Cougars.
York put it all together to set a season-high for points (9), assists (3) and shots (27) while owning the edge in shots (27-7), shots on target (8-3) and corner kicks (2-1).
The Cardinals will look to add another game to their schedule in the coming days to close out their season.
