BRONX --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer fell behind in the first half and were unable to recover despite turning up the intensity in the final stanza Wednesday in a 6-1 CUNYAC setback on the road against the Lehman College Lightning (4-5-0, 1-1-0 CUNYAC) from South Field.
The Lightning struck early with a goal by Melanie Siranaula 77 seconds in to grab a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Siranaula finished a corner kick to double Lehman's advantage in the sixth minute for what proved to be the game-winning score on Cardinal goalie
Mary Meshanski (0-2-0). Siranaula also added goals in the 15th and 23rd minutes as part of Lehman's six-goal first-half output.
Salma Valdez put York in the shot column in the 34th minute with an attempt that landed on target.
Taylor Bellmon also tested Lehman netminder Rebecca Gritz (4-5-0) with a shot on goal in the 42nd minute.
York clamped down defensively on Lehman by holding the Lightning scoreless over the final 62 minutes of play. Bellmon took York's lone shot in the second half at the 78:12 mark to score the Cardinals' first goal of the season with a breakaway tally to settle the 6-1 final.
Meshanski made one save in net for the Cardinals while Gritz stopped two shots to secure Lehman's win.
Lehman held the edge in shots on goal (7-3), shots (8-3) and corner kicks (4-1).
The Cardinals (0-4-0, 0-2-0 CUNYAC) return to the pitch on Saturday (Oct. 16) for a CUNYAC matchup against the City College of New York Beavers (5-5-0, 2-0-0 CUNYAC) at 7 p.m. from Randall's Island Park Field #10.
