www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball closed out a five-match road trip Saturday in Manhattan with a CUNYAC tri-match hosted by the Baruch College Bearcats inside ARC Arena. The Cardinals took one set (25-10, 25-16, 25-27, 25-15) from the CCNY Beavers (11-5, 2-1 CUNYAC) before falling 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-11) to the host Bearcats (13-6, 5-0 CUNYAC).
In the opener against CCNY, York steadily increased its hitting percentage throughout the match. The Cardinals peaked in the fourth set with 12 kills at a rate of .171 before finishing the contest attacking at .096. CCNY started the match attacking at .429 and finished with a .274 hitting percentage while holding the advantage in points (61-38), kills (50-36), aces (10-0), assists (46-33) and digs (47-37). York controlled the net with a 2-1 edge in blocks.
The Cardinals grabbed their first lead of the match in the second set prior to taking control of the third stanza with a 5-0 spurt and later scored the final three points to secure the set point.
David Heyliger, Jr. paced York with a match-high 14.5 points and 14 kills while
Akil Vaughn followed with 12 kills.
Mambe Koureissi added seven kills as
John Vitor's 28 assists captained the Cardinals offensively.
Juan Rodriguez scooped nine digs and Vitor and
Justin Saji each chipped in with eight.
Vukasin Bozic was one of five Beavers to tally double-digit points in leading CCNY to victory with 14 points, 13 kills and 11 digs. Andrew Chan handed out a match-leading 42 assists and Carlos Maldonado Madrid served four aces. Jonathan Liao notched a match-high 17 digs.
Against Baruch, a kill by Vaughn gave York its lone lead of the match for a 1-0 advantage during an opening set that saw the Cardinals hit .154. However, York hit -.022 in three sets compared to Baruch's .544. The Bearcats also outplayed York in points (55-14), kills (37-13), aces (15-0), blocks (3-1), assists (35-13) and digs (14-11).
Heyliger, Jr. nailed down a team-leading seven kills and four digs for York. Vaughn finished with five kills and three digs while Vitor dished out 10 assists.
Olawale Kila recorded the lone solo block of the match.
Baruch was led by Michael Higgins, who registered a match-high 10.5 points on six kills, three aces and 1.5 blocks. Stallone Shankar racked up 28 assists to captain the Bearcats on offense.
The Cardinals (3-9, 0-5 CUNYAC) return home Tuesday (Mar. 10) to take on the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers (9-6) in a non-conference showdown starting at 7 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
