JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball returned home Tuesday from a five-match road trip to drop a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18) non-conference setback to the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers (11-6).
The Cardinals picked it up during a third set that saw York hit .296 on 12 kills and finished the match attacking at a rate of .191. Colby-Sawyer hit .223 and also held the advantage in points (63-46), kills (49-37), aces (11-3) and assists (45-36) while York outplayed the Chargers in blocks (6-3) and digs (47-36).
York kept it close during a pair of opening-set losses before rebounding during the third stanza that featured seven ties and two lead changes. The Cardinals broke a 17-all tie with an 8-3 run to secure the third set. Colby-Sawyer took control of the match with an 8-0 spurt in the fourth stanza to grab a 13-7 lead. York pulled within two (15-13) before the Chargers scored 10 of the final 15 points.
Akil Vaughn led the Cardinals with a match-high 18 kills on 44 swings to finish with 18.5 points.
David Heyliger, Jr. followed with 13 kills, 13 digs, two aces and a pair of block assists to post his first-career double-double.
Juan Rodriguez handed out 32 assists to captain the offense while
Mambe Koureissi produced four blocks.
Justin Saji chipped in with 10 digs.
Eric MIller was one of four Chargers to notch double-digit points, finishing with 14 points, 12 kills and two block assists. AJ Gnieski dished out a match-high 37 assists and Giovani Dos Reis served four aces.
The Cardinals (3-10) travel Friday (Mar. 13) to Providence, Rhode Island to compete in the Johnson & Wales University Tournament (Mar. 13-14). York will open at 4 p.m. against the Emmanuel College Saints (8-9) followed by the host Wildcats (9-11) at 8 p.m. inside Wildcat Center.
