Vaughn nails down match highs for @yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball at Cairn tri-match

York College returns to the court Thursday (Feb. 13) on the road against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn)


LANGHORNE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball traveled Saturday to Longhorne, Pennsylvania for a non-conference tri-match hosted by Cairn University.  The Cardinals fell in straight sets (25-13, 27-25, 25-17) to the King's College Lions (7-1) before the host Highlanders captured a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-12 , 25-18) inside Cairn Gymnasium.

The Cardinals hit .188 during a second set that saw York register 12 kills in the opener against King's.  In the end, York hit at .068 for the match compared to .250 for the Lions. The Cardinals held the advantage in assists (24-23) and both teams drew even in kills (30-30).  King's outplayed York in points (44-35), aces (8-5), blocks (6-0) and digs (24-17).

Akil Vaughn nailed down a match-high 15 kills as Juan Rodriguez directed the Cardinals on offense with 21 assists.  David Heyliger, Jr. sparked the Cardinals with 12 points on eight kills and a match-leading four aces. John Vitor led the defensive unit with six digs.

Joe Joe Herman paced King's with 12 kills on 19 swings to attack at a rate of .574.  Sam Capwell followed with eight kills and George Beck added 21 assists.

Against Cairn, York steadily increased its points in each set as the Cardinals produced nine kills during a second stanza that saw them attack at a rate of .091.  The Cardinals finished the contest hitting -.015, compared to Cairn swinging away at .316.  Both teams registered four blocks while Cairn held the advantage in points (44.5-24), kills (28-19), aces (12-1), assists (27-17) and digs (23-15). 

York was led by Vaughn, who tallied a match-best nine kills.  Heyliger, Jr. added four kills and Mambe Koureissi and Justin Saji each followed with three.  Rodriguez dished out 14 assists and Fatmir Glavatovic served York's lone ace.  Koureissi led all blockers with 2.5 rejections and Vitor scooped up five digs.  

Colin Benjamin registered 10 points (six kills) to lead Cairn to victory.  Ben Norton had a match-leading four aces as Scott Bassill's 21 assists captained the Highlander offense.

The Cardinals (1-3) remain on the road Thursday (Feb. 13) for a non-conference showdown inside The Hill Center against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (1-2) in Brooklyn.
