York College returns home Monday (Feb. 17) for its CUNYAC opener against Hunter College and Medgar Evers College


BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball closed out a three-match road trip Thursday evening in Brooklyn with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-20) non-conference setback to the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (2-2) inside The Hill Center. 

David Heyliger, Jr. posted eight kills and served a pair of aces to lead York with 10 points.  Justin Saji followed with eight points on four kills, two aces and two blocks.  Juan Rodriguez directed the Cardinal offense with 15 assists.  Fatmir Glavatovic added one block while Erick Ortega scooped up six digs.   

Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy registered a match-high 11.5 points as Ramizjon Khudoyorov dished out a match-leading 16 assists to pace SJC.   

The Cardinals nailed down eight kills in the first set to hit -.042 and finished the match attacking at a rate of -.171 compared to SJC's  .216.  Both teams drew even in service aces (6-6) and York held the advantage in attacks (70-51).  St. Joseph's outplayed York in kills (22-16), assists (19-15), digs (24-17) and blocks (5-3).

After trailing by eight (17-9) in the opening set, a kill by John Vitor sparked a 6-0 Cardinal spurt as Heyliger, Jr. served five-straight points to pull York within two.  SJC put together a pair of 4-0 runs during a first set that saw them hit .438 to set the tone.  York jumped ahead early in the second set with a pair of points served by Saji before the Bears grabbed the momentum back with a 15-2 scoring spree.  The Bears took a commanding 13-point lead in the third stanza with 14-2 run.  York rallied with a 15-6 spurt as Anthony Nazario, Jr. served four-straight points and Vitor later served five-consecutive points to slice the deficit to four (24-20).  Despite, a timely comeback attempt, a costly service ace by Vitor ended the match. 

The Cardinals (1-4, 0-0 CUNYAC) return home Monday (Feb. 17) to open CUNYAC play starting at 10 a.m. against the Hunter College Hawks (7-3, 0-0 CUNYAC) and close with the Medgar Evers College Cougars (4-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) at 2 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
